northbound lanes between the 5-81 on and off ramps.

The front wheel of the cab was knocked into the tank, releasing diesel fuel
all over the interstate.
Traffic is being detoured onto 5-81 southbound, exiting on Peters Creek
Road.
Police then have motorists getting back on northbound from Peters Creek.
No word yet on how long the lanes will be closed.

A jury tonight recommended Lewis Jordan Powell, Junior spend 25-years in
prison for killing 17-year old Jason Lamont Chandler.
The teen was shot several times outside the Super Eight Motel in Riverdale
on New Years Day.
Powell had tried to convince the jury he acted in self defense.
But prosecutors maintained the killing was out of revenge-- that the two
belonged to rival drug gangs.
Powell was a member of the 1991 Halifax County football team the year it won
the state title.

Chief Federal Judge Jackson Kiser this week concluded that there are
"material facts in dispute," so he denied a motion for a summary judgment.

((Two suspects in handcuffs and one big break in the case of vandals who
shattered car windows on L.A. freeways.

A tip led officers to the suspects.
They are felons and who violated their parole because authorities found a
shot gun and a hand gun in their car during Wednesday night's arrest.
They say they also found evidence in their homes.
Vandals have been smashing windows for about a month now, striking at night,
making it tough to spot suspects or their weapons.
They first hit cars in only a couple of areas, later branching out to smash
windows on just about any los angeles freeway.
LA RESIDENT: L.A. IS GETTING SO CRAZY.
Vandals shattered nearly 300-windows, risking the lives of the drivers and
certain prison time if they re convicted.
GOVERNOR PETE WILSON: IT IS ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON. IF A LOSS OF LIFE
OCCURS IT WILL BE REGARDED AS MURDER.
And he says, if early leads hold true, more people will be arrested.

The Late Model stock cars began arriving at Martinsville yesterday for this
weekend's Taco Bell 300.
Over 125 cars are trying to beat defending champ Tony McGuire, who himself
beat all odds to cross the border in 1995.

(( McGuire's win in last year's Taco Bell 300 was so bizarre, folks still have
trouble believing it. First he failed to make the top 20 in time trials,
qualifying 65th. He then missed1 making the field from one of the 25 lap
qualifying races until another car in front of him was disqualified.
He then went from the back of the 36 car field to the front, only to finish
second to Elliott Sadler. Not bad for someone driving with his left hand in a
cast.
But this story is far from finished, because three hours after the race's
end, NASCAR disqualified Sadler's car for having an illegal engine. The
emotional rollercoaster finally came to a stop with a staged victory lane
celebration. Tony McGuire was suddenly $25 thousand dollars richer.

McGuire proved his performance wasn't a fluke by coming back in this
Spring's Miller 300 and finishing second to Donnie Apple.
Now he's hoping to repeat but in conventional manner.

Good news for Tech basketball fans tonight as Ace Custis has made it through
knee surgery with minimal problems.

Ace Custis went through an arthroscopic procedure today on his left knee at
Montgomery Regional hospital.
Doctors weren't sure of the severity of the problem, but they just had to
shave away some loose cartilage and Ace should only miss two or three weeks of
workouts and practice.
