A Wirtz man was going around 55 miles-an-hour when the child darted out in
front on him on a Bedford County highway.
3-year old Wesley Updike was struck and killed.
It happened on Route 1-22 in Moneta around four.
Joel Shapiro could not stop his Chrysler Concorde in time.

Updike was airlifted to Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Police say it appears Shapiro was NOT speeding in the 55- mile- an hour
They are still investigating.
A tractor trailer accident on Interstate 81 in Roanoke County closed the
northbound lanes between the 5-81 on and off ramps.
The tractor trailer apparently hit the side of a bridge.
The front wheel of the cab was knocked into the tank, releasing diesel fuel
all over the interstate.
Traffic is being detoured onto 5-81 southbound, exiting on Peters Creek
Police then have motorists getting back on northbound from Peters Creek.
No word yet on how long the lanes will be closed.
John Warner got caught faking it in a TV ad.
Today, he apologized for what he calls "a serious and terrible mistake."
And he canned the P-R firm that produced the doctored photo.

The Dole campaign made a stop in Roanoke today, but it wasn't Bob who
rallied republicans here.
It was his daughter, Robin Dole.
A resident of northern Virginia and a graduate of Virginia Tech, Robin
Dole has campaigned for her father since she was five years old.
Today, she said he will keep his promise to cut taxes and balance the
budget without slashing medicare or other critical programs.

A new poll from Virginia Commonwealth University suggests that President
Clinton has taken the lead among Virginia voters.
But Robin Dole predicts her father and Jack Kemp will continue the

A former Halifax County football star convicted of second degree murder
could be 49-years old when he's released from prison.
A jury tonight recommended Lewis Jordan Powell, Junior spend 25-years in
prison for killing 17-year old Jason Lamont Chandler.
The teen was shot several times outside the Super Eight Motel in Riverdale
on New Years Day.
Powell had tried to convince the jury he acted in self defense.
But prosecutors maintained the killing was out of revenge-- that the two
belonged to rival drug gangs.
Powell was a member of the 1991 Halifax County football team the year it won
the state title.
The choke-hold death of a Roanoke man at the hands of city police may be
sorted out by a federal jury.
Chief Federal Judge Jackson Kiser this week concluded that there are
"material facts in dispute," so he denied a motion for a summary judgment.
Eric Scott Lee resisted arrest but was subdued by police responding to a

domestic disturbance call.
Judge Kiser DID find the officers had "probable cause" for arresting the
21-year old suspect.
Two women in the house said Lee had beaten them and taken 80-dollars from
one of them.
If the City cannot negotiate a settlement with Lee's widow, a jury will have
to decide whether Roanoke Police used excessive force.

((Two suspects in handcuffs and one big break in the case of vandals who
shattered car windows on L.A. freeways.

A tip led officers to the suspects.
They are felons and who violated their parole because authorities found a
shot gun and a hand gun in their car during Wednesday night's arrest.
They say they also found evidence in their homes.
Vandals have been smashing windows for about a month now, striking at night,
making it tough to spot suspects or their weapons.
They first hit cars in only a couple of areas, later branching out to smash
windows on just about any los angeles freeway.
LA RESIDENT: L.A. IS GETTING SO CRAZY.
Vandals shattered nearly 300-windows, risking the lives of the drivers and
certain prison time if they re convicted.

Things aren't exactly back to normal on Interstate 81 in Rockbridge
County... but they look a lot better than they did earlier today.
On the southbound side at the 205 mile marker, traffic was detoured off the
highway for 15 miles.
Crews were trying to fix this- a massive sinkhole-- 35 feet long and 75 feet
It caused an hour-long delay on the Interstate and a headache for motorists.

The Late Model stock cars began arriving at Martinsville yesterday for this
weekend's Taco Bell 300.

trouble believing it. First he failed to make the top 20 in time trials,
qualifying 65th. He then missed1 making the field from one of the 25 lap
qualifying races until another car in front of him was disqualified.
He then went from the back of the 36 car field to the front, only to finish
second to Elliott Sadler. Not bad for someone driving with his left hand in a
But this story is far from finished, because three hours after the race's
end, NASCAR disqualified Sadler's car for having an illegal engine. The
emotional rollercoaster finally came to a stop with a staged victory lane

McGuire proved his performance wasn't a fluke by coming back in this

Good news for Tech basketball fans tonight as Ace Custis has made it through
knee surgery with minimal problems.
Ace Custis went through an arthroscopic procedure today on his left knee at
Montgomery Regional hospital.
Doctors weren't sure of the severity of the problem, but they just had to
shave away some loose cartilage and Ace should only miss two or three weeks of
workouts and practice.
It may not have high profile sponsorships like Goodyear and Michelin, but
Yokohama Tire has seen its share of checkered flags.
Yokohama is affiliated with several teams on the International Motorsports
Workers at the company's Salem plant got a chance to see two cars on the
BMW- Yokohama team, and meet one of the drivers.
This year the team came in first place in one racing class.
