October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month---this year 700-thousand women
will undergo surgery on a breast lump to see if it's cancerous.
But there's a new application of an old technology that may help spare
women the need for breast biopsy.
This past spring the F-D-A approved use of High Definition Imaging or
H-D-I ultrasound to tell if a breast lump is benign or if it might be cancer.
Older ultrasound machines could only tell a doctor if a lump was solid or a

OUT Q=clearer, sharper.
Many doctors were skeptical of H-D-I's ability to rule out cancer until a
large study showed it was 99 percent accurate in finding a benign lump.
Meaning it can almost always reveal when a lump is NOT CANCER-- sparing the
patient an unnecessary surgery to remove the lump.
IN Q=Based on

THIS HAS MALIGNANT CHARACTERISTICS IT HAS TO COME OUT. ))
OUT Q=to come out.
H-D-I has another benefit for women---it can reveal if a lump is
benign in just 15 minutes--not the days or even week it takes for results
from a surgical biopsy.

OUT Q=so worried.
H-D-I ultrasound is not intended to replace mammography but used
together-- they may help decrease the number of surgeries women undergo each
year in the battle against breast cancer.
One interesting note about the risk factors for breast cancer.
The primary ones include having a family history of breast cancer,
having no children-- or,
having your first child after age 30.
Also, beginning menstruation early, that's before age 12...
or going through menopause late....after age 55.
And finally, eating a high-fat diet.
