A new poll suggests that President Clinton has overtaken Bob Dole in Virginia.
The Virginia Commonwealth University survey shows 48 percent of voters supporting Clinton, 41 percent supporting Dole and six percent choosing Reform Party candidate Ross Perot.

21- year old Lewis Jordan Powell Junior testified he acted in self defense when he shot 17- year old Jason Lamont Chandler.
But the jury apparently didn't buy his story-- he was convicted of murder about an hour ago.
The teenager was shot outside the Super Eight Motel on New Years Day.
Commonwealth's attorney John Greenbacker says the two belonged to rival drug gangs.
The jury could sentence Powell up to 40- years in prison.

For nearly 24 hours, a portion of Interstate 81 in Rockbridge County was closed off.
Work crews were trying to repair a large gap in one of the southbound lanes.
It's still not fixed... but just about an hour ago VDOT opened up the highway.
Unfortunately for motorists earlier in the day, they were part of an hour long back up.
And as Scott Prince reports, it was no joy ride.

((Motorists on the southbound side of Interstate 81 had a "sinking" suspicion something was wrong-- and they were right.
There was definitely a "hole" lot of trouble on the highway.
The culprit, a massive sinkhole-- 35 feet deep and 75 feet wide at the 209 mile marker in Rockbridge County.
It forced VDOT to close off more than 15 miles of the Federal four- lane... causing an hour- long back up on the interstate and a detour on to Route 11.
Needless to say, frustration levels were running high.

The apartments will NOT be replaced.
Instead-- the Danville organization was awarded 76 "section eight" housing vouchers worth 600- thousand dollars.
Section eight housing gives families a chance to live somewhere besides public housing-- the government pays a portion of their rent.
The Danville Redevelopment and Housing Authority was also awarded a 250- thousand dollar drug elimination grant.

A federal judge has rejected the advisory jury verdict in a dispute between the makers of Massengill and Summer's Eve... feminine hygiene products.
In June the jury concluded that SmithKline Beecham's ads were intentionally misleading.

They claimed Massengill "cleanses better than Summer's Eve," a competing product made by C-B Fleet.
At trial SmithKline presented clinical test results to back up its advertising.
This week Judge James Turk concluded that SmithKline's tests and studies were superior to Fleets, and that they properly supported the claims in the Massengill ads.

(( McGuire's win in last year's Taco Bell 300 was so bizarre, folks still have trouble believing it. First he failed to make the top 20 in time trials, qualifying 65th. He then missed1 making the field from one of the 25 lap qualifying races until another car in front of him was disqualified.
He then went from the back of the 36 car field to the front, only to finish second to Elliott Sadler. Not bad for someone driving with his left hand in a cast.
But this story is far from finished, because three hours after the race's end, NASCAR disqualified Sadler's car for having an illegal engine. The emotional rollercoaster finally came to a stop with a staged victory lane celebration. Tony McGuire was suddenly $25 thousand dollars richer. ((TONY MCGUIRE/DEFENDING TACO BELL 300 CHAMPION:))
McGuire proved his performance wasn't a fluke by coming back in this Spring's Miller 300 and finishing second to Donnie Apple.

On October 3rd, police say he paid 78 cents for $190 worth of merchandise at the University Bookstore.
