An 87- year- old woman is killed in her Christiansburg home.

I'm Eric Earnhart.
A 51-year-old handy man is in jail tonight charged with first degree murder.
Police found 87-year-old Anna Virginia Lester's body yesterday in her
Radford Street home.
They're not releasing the cause of her death but investigators say there
were cuts and bruises on her body.
James Reed is being charged with the crime.

He will be arraigned on Tuesday.

A death row prisoner will be able get regular visits from his wife when she
is acting as a member of his legal team.
Joseph O'Dell's wife, Lori Urs, is also an assistant to his lawyers.
A U-S District Judge handed down the ruling yesterday.
The state Department of Corrections had said this summer that Urs would be
allowed contact visits only as the spouse of a death row inmate -- once every
Contact visits by legal advisers are allowed as often as necessary.
Prison officials cited security concerns as the reason to limit Urs' visits.
O'Dell was sentenced to die for the 19-85 murder of a 44-year old Virginia
The president of a union that represents thousands of people in our area
survived a plane crash earlier today.
United Mine Workers President Cecil Roberts was on a plane that went down in
Harlan County, Kentucky around noon today.
Roberts only suffered minor injuries.
He was treated and released at a nearby hospital.
Officials haven't released any more information about the crash.

democratic presidential candidate.
A new poll out today shows 45 percent of Virginia voters surveyed picked
Bill Clinton, 35 percent favored Bob Dole, giving Mr. Clinton a 10 point lead.
Sixteen percent say they still haven't made up their minds...
Three percent picked Reform Party candidate Ross Perot.
The last Republican presidential candidate to lose in Virginia was Barry
Goldwater, in 1964.
The aftermath of "Tropical Storm Fran" is still being felt on the Southside.
About a dozen roads remain closed in Pittsylvania County.
Local highway officials say some of the roads are missing pipes.
High water also weakened some bridges.

The Washington Redskins won their fifth game in a row beating New England 27
to 22 upping their record to 5 and 1.
