State party chairman Randy Forbes is indirectly slamming President Clinton
in a speech to children around the state.

Virginia Republicans will be handing out what they call "Character Counts"

A small plane headed for Myrtle Beach, South Carolina made an emergency
landing at the Roanoke Regional Airport today.
The pilot noticed smoke in the cabin while he was flying over the area.
He called air traffic controllers who gave him clearance to land, and the
pilot brought the plane down safely.

Using his "environmentally friendly" endorsements as his theme, Democrat
Mark Warner made a campaign swing through Roanoke this afternoon.
Mark Warner stood along the banks of the Roanoke River, saying John Warner
is NO boy scout.
The democrat says a strong economy and a clean environment are NOT mutually
exclusive...and today he announced his endorsements from the Sierra Club and
the National League of Conservation Voters.

Entertainment mogul Merv Griffin has joins the ranks of men diagnosed with
Griffin's publicist says doctors expect a full recovery.

Yesterday's Taco Bell was decided not on the track but in the garage for the
second straight year at the Martinsville Speedway.
Last year Elliott Sadler was stripped of his trophy and first place check
when NASCAR inspectors discovered during a post race inspection that the team
had illegally angled the cylinder heads in the engine.
Yesterday the crime was the same, but the culprit was North Carolina's Jay
Fogleman. NASCAR stripped him of his $30 thousand dollars in winnings and
awarded the money to second place finisher B.A. Wilson.
Wilson started the final 100 laps of the race in the lead but had slipped
back to fourth on the final lap.
That was before race leader David Hyder was spun out in turn one by David
Wilson and Fogleman avoided the mess and made it across the line ahead of
Hyder finished 18th and probably would have won the race were it not for the
spin, but then again maybe not, earlier this Fall Hyder won at Wilkesboro but
was then disqualified for having an illegal engine and an illegal clutch.
