Two of the largest railroads in the country have decided to join forces, and
odds are it will ultimately have some effect on our area.
C-S-X is buying Conrail for more than eight- BILLION- dollars.
The new freight company would rival the nation's largest rail lines in size.
For the past decade, there has been speculation that Conrail would merge
with NORFOLK SOUTHERN, the dominant railroad in southwest and central Virginia.

Len Besthoff has been working the phones this morning to try to answer a
number of questions that remain about this deal.
For starters Len, what are the odds of this going through?
Well Melanie, as you might guess, there are a number of regulatory hurdles
and hoops that must be jumped through.

The deal must be approved by not only the federal government, but also by
shareholders of both railroads.
Don't forget that about 10 years ago Conrail and Norfolk Southern were in
merger talks that were held up in part because of a challenge by C-S-X.
And in a release this morning, N-S sounds like a challenge by them to THIS
deal could be a possibility.
N-S said this combination raises serious concerns, it will act aggressively
to protect the interests of the shipping public, and it does not rule out any
Melanie there are numerous other questions as well, like, what about all the
cooperative agreements that currently exist between N-S and Conrail.

It's good news, bad news for General Motors.

Hussein visited the West Bank today for the first time since losing the
territory to Israel in the 19-67 war.
Nine Campbell County elementary school students suffered minor injuries when
their school bus was struck by a car today.
It happened at about 8:30 at the intersection of Rainbow Forest Drive and
The bus, carrying 56 Tomahawk Elementary school students had stopped to pick
up a passenger when it was rearended by a van.
Police say the driver of the van was blinded by the sun and could not see
the bus until it was too late.
Nine students were transported to Lynchburg General Hospital complaining
mostly of neck pain.
All nine were treated and released.
Police say the van driver will not be charged in the incident.
Botetourt County school bus drivers continue to DRIVE their point home.
This morning, they vented their frustrations at the Board of Supervisors
They're upset over a number of work- related items... including wages and

Board members told them nothing could be done, because the school budget had
already been set.
Now the group is considering getting some legal advice.

But Goodlatte says the plan passed by congress actually increases spending

In Atlanta a tense hostage standoff situation continues at this hour.
A 22- year- old man has been holding his wife, baby son and teenage brother
hostage since last night.
Police say the man stabbed his wife's five- year- old son at a house in
Atlanta's Grant Park neighborhood, before taking the hostages and fleeing to
his mother's home.
Another hostage -- a ten- year- old girl -- left the house earlier today.
She went through a window.

Doctors are letting Pope John Paul return to the Vatican.
They removed his stitches today, one week after his appendectomy.
Doctors say the 76- year- old pontiff's surgery was a success.
But Vatican officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, now say
