Most scientists agree smoking causes lung cancer. Today BRAND NEW evidence
that shows HOW it causes cancer.
Lawyers may soon be the only ones who can close a real estate deal. We'll

When you buy a house, who does the closing?
Tonight the Virginia Bar Association takes up a controversial measure that
would bar anyone but lawyers from handling real estate closings. We'll tell you
what they decide.
Join us for News 7 at Eleven.
For decades scientists have said smoking cause lung cancer.
But they were never sure precisely how- until now.
A team of researchers from Houston offered the first molecular evidence
directly linking cigarettes to lung cancer.
((DR MICHAEL ERIKSON/C.D.C.: THIS STUDY SHOWS US THE PRECISE CHEMICAL, THE
PRECISE GENE, THE PRECISE LOCATION OF THAT GENE THAT RESULTS IN CANCER
SUPER=01-Dr. Michael Erikson/C.D.C.;
OUT Q=in cancer forming."
The study says the carcinogen Benzo-a-PY-rene or B-P in cigarette smoke
enters the lungs-
It then transforms into a new compound B-P-D-E- which travels to the critical
gene- P-53 known to protect us from lung cancer.
It disables that guardian gene which allows tumors to multiply.
((DR. ERICKSON: THERE IS NO LONGER ANY QUESTION AS TO WHETHER CIGARETTE SMOKING
CAUSES LUNG CANCER IN HUMANS.))
OUT Q=in humans."
The tobacco industry will probably challenge the findings. But
scientists, who've said for 50 years that smoking was a killer, now claim to
have the critical piece of evidence to prove it.
It'll apparently take more money for VMI to admit women.
The school says it needs more than five and half million additional dollars
in state money to cover the cost of accommodating women.
That would be a 55-percent increase over the current allocation of
10-point-4 million dollars from Richmond.
Governor Allen was on post today for the annual transportation conference
He balked at footing the entire bill to adapt barracks for women's privacy.

The Governor said he did not discuss V-M-I's request for additional funding
today with Superintendent Josiah Bunting.
But he DID say he wants to help, and he believes the taxpayers would accept
SOME additional expense.
The Supreme Court ruled June 26th that V-M-I cannot continue to accept state
funds without opening its enrollment to women.
One of the ironies is: it will almost certainly cost the state more to
comply with the court order.
