V-M-I says it needs an additional 5-point-7 million dollars in state funds
to cover the cost of accommodating women on Post.
That would be a 55-percent increase over the current allocation of
10-point-4 million dollars from Richmond.

The Governor said he did not discuss V-M-I's request for additional funding
today with Superintendent Josiah Bunting.
But he DID say he wants to help, and he believes the taxpayers would accept
SOME additional expense.
The Supreme Court ruled June 26th that V-M-I cannot continue to accept state
funds without opening its enrollment to women.
One of the ironies is: it will almost certainly cost the state more to
comply with the court order.
Lt. Governor Don Beyer says school systems need to get tougher with students
who fail the Literacy Passport Test.
Beyer says sixth-graders who flunk the test should have to take extra
classes until they can pass it.

Beyer told school superintendents in Lynchburg this morning that the state
would pay the cost of the first re-test.
But if the student flunked again and needed more work, the local school
district would have to pay for that.
The capital murder trial of Ben Lilly will enter a fourth day of jury
Lilly is accused in the abduction and murder of a Virginia Tech student.
Attorneys are trying to select a panel of 24 jurors from which to choose the
final 12 to hear the case.
The problem has been finding people who haven't already formed an opinion
about the case, as well as people who are willing to consider the evidence
before making up their minds about the death penalty.

Troy Webb returned home last night after spending seven years in prison for
a crime he didn't commit.
The governor pardoned Webb yesterday, after D-N-A evidence cleared him of a
