(( Three days of national mourning have been declared by the President of Guatemala in the wake of the fatal crush of fans at a soccer match in Guatemala City on Wednesday.
The deaths of 83 people, including 15 children has been described by Guatemala's President as one of the worst tragedies in his country's history. Officials say about 180 people were also injured when soccer fans tried to crowd into an already full stadium. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment of injuries ranging from shock to broken bones. The 45,000-seat stadium was past capacity officials say. The world sogcer!association FIFA, say forgers appargntly sold fake tkckets to the match, causing the over capacity problem. Officials have conflicting reports on what caused the stampede. The overcrowding is one theory. Reports also indicate that people began to run away when some intoxicated people began to fight. As they tried to flee, people began falling one on top of another.
The fans packed the stadium to watch a qualifying match for the 1998 World Cup tournament between Guatemala and Costa Rica. Security forces could not stop the crowd from surging through one gate, wherg peplg were trampled and suffcated by the stampeding fans. The soccer match was cancelled.
