A Delta Airlines jetliner skidded off the runway at New York's LaGuardia
Airport tonight, with the landing gear apparently collapsing as the jet came
in.

Passengers say as the plane approached the runway, they felt it drift to the
right, and then hit something hard.
The plane spun around and skidded off the runway, finally coming to rest
facing the opposite direction.
The 63 people on board evacuated the plane. While no one was hurt during the
landing, a Port Authority spokesman says four people were slightly injured
during the evacuation.
The plane was coming into New York from Atlanta when the incident happened.

Lili's 90 mile-an-hour winds blew down buildings and drove people from their
homes in Havana.
But no one was killed. Lili's path missed the most densely populated areas
of the Island, and more than 175 people were evacuated from dangerous
locations.
The wind and falling trees cut off power to much of Island overnight. Cuban
officials say about 50 homes were destroyed.

In addition to fatalities, more than one million people were injured in

A University of Virginia senior who died in an early-morning fire was drunk
when the fire broke out.
Police say 22-year-old Elizabeth McGowan had three times the legal
level of alcohol in her blood when she died.
They say it may have prevented her from getting away from Thursday's fire.
Meanwhile, Charlottesville's Commonwealth's Attorney is awaiting
the results of an investigation before deciding whether to charge two U-Va
students who threw a smoke bomb into the building.
The bomb is the suspected cause of the blaze.

Former President Jimmy Carter is in the country as an observer. He met with

Both candidates are promising at least 100 thousand new jobs if elected.

outside Moscow, where he's waiting for heart surgery.

awareness in your life.

team today at "To The Rescue Museum."
The four-legged rescue workers were a big hit with shoppers at Tanglewood
Mall.

These search and rescue dogs help emergency service workers find lost
people.
They're not regular tracking dogs. They're called "Air Scent" dogs
which means the animals pick up a human scent through the air and not by
following a scent on the ground.

They canvassed the shoulders of state roadways picking up trash as they
passed.

several exits on interstate 81.
Their day started at 8 and you can tell by the number of bags of trash the
group collected that their efforts were sorely needed.
The Virginia Department of Transportation sponsored the "Great State
Trash-Off."
The state-wide, one-day effort focused on cleaning up litter along the roads
and river banks.
The event is part of Adopt-A-Highway month.
More than 63-hundred volunteer groups across the state help keep over
14-thousand miles of highways clean year-round.

The Icecaps broke the ice First. The puck is shot at the goal from the
middle of the ice and its slipped into the net on the rebound to make it 1 to
nothing.
But the Express came back. Jeff Loder steals the puck at the side of the
net and slaps it in for the score to tie the score at one to one.
The Icecaps scored the final two SUPER=38-Roanoke//Raleigh//;goals of the
first Period. Kris Miller fires a shot from the blue line past the Express
goalie Raleigh led 2 to 1 and the Icecaps win it 7 to 5.

The college professor had sought political asylm, because she helped rebel
troops in a civil war in Georgia several years ago.
After she was deported, she managed to get to Poland with an old passport.
Then some California lawmakers helped her get a permanent visa, and with
that, she came home today.
