A Delta Airlines jetliner skidded off the runway at New York's LaGuardia
Airport tonight, with the landing gear apparently collapsing as the jet came
Passengers say as the plane approached the runway, they felt it drift to the
right, and then hit something hard.
The plane spun around and skidded off the runway, finally coming to rest
facing the opposite direction.
The 63 people on board evacuated the plane. While no one was hurt during the
landing, a Port Authority spokesman says four people were slightly injured
during the evacuation.
The plane was coming into New York from Atlanta when the incident happened.
Hurricane Lili blew through the Bahamas today, but only caused minimal
Cuba was not so lucky yesterday.
Lili's 90 mile-an-hour winds blew down buildings and drove people from their
homes in Havana.
But no one was killed. Lili's path missed the most densely populated areas
of the Island, and more than 175 people were evacuated from dangerous
The wind and falling trees cut off power to much of Island overnight. Cuban
officials say about 50 homes were destroyed.
Bob Dole has made his last appearance in Virginia before next month's

Though Dole has stepped up attacks on the issue of character, it doesn't
appear to be working in the polls...
The latest numbers show the president's character has a higher approval
rating than Mr. Dole's.
A road test might not be the only obstacle standing in the way of new
drivers getting their licenses.
In his weekly radio address President Clinton today proposed they also be
required to pass a drug test.
He also ordered states to crack down on people under 21 who drink any amount
of alcohol, no matter how small, and then drive.

Mr. Clinton purposes that states who don't pass, or already have such a law,
will lose some of their federal highway funds.

Despite efforts to raise public awareness, drunk driving accidents were up
eight per cent last year nation-wide.
More than 17 thousand people died in drunk driving accidents in 1995, as
opposed to some 15 thousand in 1994.
In addition to fatalities, more than one million people were injured in
D-W-I related accidents.
Local efforts to combat drunk driving now include the "Keep the Star White"
campaign, but it may only last through November.

A University of Virginia senior who died in an early-morning fire was drunk
when the fire broke out.
Police say 22-year-old Elizabeth McGowan had three times the legal
level of alcohol in her blood when she died.
They say it may have prevented her from getting away from Thursday's fire.
Meanwhile, Charlottesville's Commonwealth's Attorney is awaiting
the results of an investigation before deciding whether to charge two U-Va
students who threw a smoke bomb into the building.
The bomb is the suspected cause of the blaze.
A move to legalize certain kinds of marijuana use in California is running
strong in the polls.
Proposition 215 on the November ballot would legalize marijuana for
The effort gained national attention when the state attorney general shut
down a group offering marijuana to cancer and AIDS patients.
Proposition 215 is ahead in the polls, by 21 points.

That's how many are on the ballot in Nicaragua, though, according to the
polls, only two candidates have a real chance of winning.
Former President Jimmy Carter is in the country as an observer. He met with
both front runners, Daniel Ortega, and Arnoldo Aleman, today, saying he is

Boris Yeltsin has named a new Security Council Secretary.
Former Russian Parliament speaker Ivan Rybkin was appointed to the post

Former Secretary Alexander Lebed was fired last Thursday for what the
president called "insubordination".
Yeltsin made today's announcement after meeting with Rybkin at a rest home
outside Moscow, where he's waiting for heart surgery.
This week thousands of people remembered last year's million man march...
But more than 40 years ago... one woman, made history...
Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the bus.
Because of her, the Supreme court declared bus segregation unconstitutional.
Parks was in Philadelphia today, signing copies of her new book, and talking
to students about the future.
Park's advice... don't drop out, get good grades, and have spiritual
awareness in your life.
Organizers say a march celebrating family and community unity is a small
step toward Rebuilding The Black Community.
Members of the Roanoke R-B-C sponsored "The Thousand Family March."
The numbers didn't come close to the title, but organizers say the
foundation for a better tomorrow has been laid.

The R-B-C Center is trying to meet the needs of the people in the
neighborhood by offering educational and health programs.
But they say the organization needs more community support before it can
help make the journey into the future

newest members of the Botetourt Mounted Search and Rescue team were introduced
And a group of volunteers spent part of their Saturday on the road--they
were part of Virginia's Great State Trash Off. We'll find out what that's all
about when we return.

Botetourt Mounted Search and Rescue introduced several new members of their
team today at "To The Rescue Museum."
The four-legged rescue workers were a big hit with shoppers at Tanglewood
These search and rescue dogs help emergency service workers find lost
They're not regular tracking dogs. They're called "Air Scent" dogs
which means the animals pick up a human scent through the air and not by
following a scent on the ground.
When the dogs are fully certified they'll accompany the team on rescue

Both the search and rescue team and the museum operate on donations.
"To The Rescue" is a national museum which tells the story of the men and
women who helped make the rescue movement what it is today.
Volunteers walked miles today to do some house cleaning for Virginia.
They canvassed the shoulders of state roadways picking up trash as they
Workers from P-Y-A-Monarch Foods spent the morning picking up trash at
several exits on interstate 81.
Their day started at 8 and you can tell by the number of bags of trash the
group collected that their efforts were sorely needed.
The Virginia Department of Transportation sponsored the "Great State
The state-wide, one-day effort focused on cleaning up litter along the roads
and river banks.
The event is part of Adopt-A-Highway month.
More than 63-hundred volunteer groups across the state help keep over
14-thousand miles of highways clean year-round.
A fatal traffic accident in Roanoke less than an hour ago--
Witnesses say a pedestrian was hit
on Route 581 southbound near the Peters Creek Road exit.
Few details are available--it is not known why the victim was on the
Emergency workers at the scene confirm the man's injuries were fatal.

The Eagles of G.W. Danville have taken control of the Western District race
with a 26 to 14 win over rival E.C. Glass.

In the second quarter, Garnett McDaniel takes the handoff takes it in from

Anthony Poindexter led the defense with three interceptions and a blocked
