A confrontation with police proved fatal for a Roanoke man.
41- year- old Rodney Lee Wilhelm was shot and killed early this morning outside of his southeast Roanoke home.

The incident unfolded near the intersection of Jerome and Padbury Streets about three A- M.
Police say they responded to a call of a woman screaming for help.
According to a news release, Wilhelm had fired shots into his own house. When they arrived, they say he was standing in the street with a gun in his hand.
Police say he fired a .44 caliber handgun at the pavement, then pointed another weapon at an officer.
They say that's when the officer opened fire.

Neighbors who witnessed the shooting confirmed that Wilhelm fired one of his guns, before the officer opened fire on him.
But family members dispute the department's version of events... and say they believe police could have avoided a fatal confrontation.
The officer who fired the fatal shots has been placed on administrative leave until the investigation is completed.

State Police say 45- year- old Richard Leo Thompson of Emporia walked into the path of a car.
He was taken to a Roanoke hospital where he died about 45 minutes later.

Police say her father evidently lost control of the vehicle he was driving as it was traveling in the northbound lane.
He apparently struck an embankment causing the car to overturn and skid on its roof.
Both the child and the adult were wearing their safety belts.
The girl was airlifted to Roanoke Memorial, but her injuries are not believed to be life threathening.
Their names have not been released.
Police say the accident is still under investigation.

Ernie Irvan made his move here he passes Points leader Jeff Gordon putting him a lap down on lap 163.
Terry Labonte was cruising along as usual running in fifth place at this point in the race. He trailed his teammate Gordon by 1 in the points race.
Jarrett made another run at the lead and he was the leader at the halfway point of the race.
Then the caution came out when Johnny Benson gets lose in car number 30 and hits the wall hard bringing out the fourth caution of the day.
Then after another caution Ricky Rudd pulled his Tide machine to the front and he was the leader with 69 laps left in the Race.
Jeff Burton worked his way from the back and he was running second putting the pressure on Rudd.
But Rudd would lead the final 70 laps of the race and the victory extends his personal winning streak giving him a win 14 years in a row.
