Authorities say it started yesterday afternoon when a man telephoned a bomb threat to the visitor's center on the Washington side of the Dam.
Authorities say the bomb was not real, but the gun he brandished was.
Following his threats to explode the bomb, and shoot anyone coming near, dozens of law officers from five different jurisdictions arrived on the scene.
About an hour later the standoff ended when the suspect was fatally shot.
The F-B-I says they'll identify the gunman this morning.

A confrontation with police proved fatal for a Roanoke man.
41- year- old Rodney Lee Wilhelm was shot and killed early yesterday morning outside of his southeast Roanoke home.

The incident unfolded near the intersection of Jerome and Padbury Streets about three A- M.
Police say they responded to a call of a woman screaming for help.
According to a news release, Wilhelm had fired shots into his own house. When they arrived, they say he was standing in the street with a gun in his hand.
Police say he fired a .44 caliber handgun at the pavement, then pointed another weapon at an officer.
They say that's when the officer opened fire.

Neighbors who witnessed the shooting confirmed that Wilhelm fired one of his guns, before the officer opened fire on him.
But family members dispute the department's version of events... and say they believe police could have avoided a fatal confrontation.

Police say her father evidently lost control of the vehicle he was driving as it was traveling in the northbound lane.
He apparently struck an embankment causing the car to overturn and skid on its roof.
Both the child and the adult were wearing their safety belts.
The girl was airlifted to Roanoke Memorial, but her injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
Their names have not been released.
Police say the accident is still under investigation.

A spokesman for the Los Padres National Forest says most of the 900 firefighters were being sent home overnight.
The lighter winds and cooler temperatures continued to help firefighters.
80-percent of the 668-acre blaze was contained, as of last night.
The fire started Friday, 30 miles south of Carmel and Monterey.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
People who evacuated the area were allowed to return, and businesses that were closed were allowed to reopen.

A prison reform group wants to stop the state from making money off telephone calls made by prison inmates. The group -- Virginia CURE -- will ask the General Assembly to end what it called a kickback paid to the state for inmate phone calls.
A legislative watchdog group said the state made seven- and- a- half- million dollars last year from inmate calls.
CURE said the money is coming from inmates' families who pay for the collect calls made by their relatives behind bars.
The state says inmates have to go through an operator in making calls to prevent fraud and abuse.
