Gun fire erupted in and around this Giles County home for the better part of the day.
Inside was 43- year- old Barry Peters... armed with nearly half- a- dozen weapons including an assault rifle.
Outside was a swat team... hoping to diffuse the situation.
Police watched as Peters started shooting aimlessly around the house.
And at one point he shot out from one of his windows and shattered the rear windshield of this police cruiser.
Authorities had the home surrounded for hours... trying to negotiate with Peters... hoping to bring him outside without anyone getting hurt.
Then they made the decision to force him out of the house. STAND UP 18:15:25
In the 5th hour of the standoff, police shot twenty to thirty rounds of tear gas into the home... practically through every window. END STAND UP

That sentence is for the murder of a sherriff's deputy in December of 1994.

Wheeler pled guilty in August to second degree murder and a related firearms charge. Yesterday the judge sentenced him to 43 years in prison.
Wheeler shot and killed deputy Clifford Dicker when Dicker tried to serve him with arrest papers.
The defense was hoping Wheeler could serve a lesser sentence in a detention center, saying he was a victim of a traumatic childhood and poor upbringing.

The Virginia Military Institute's Co- education plans may soon be investigated by the Justice Department. The Federal Agency has requested a hearing for November 13th in federal court in Roanoke.
But the state apparently does not think it has to produce a detailed plan to admit women.
Such a plan might include things like whether keeping the school's strict physical training requirements poses a hindrance to female cadets.
