And a Giles County man takes his own life following a six hour standoff with
state and county lawmen.

Thousands of firefighters are battling five wind- driven wildfires in
And so far the fires are winning.
The flames continue their relentless path toward the ocean, leaving behind
thousands of charred acres and almost one hundred damaged or destroyed homes.
One single fire near San Diego has destroyed around 60 homes.
A blaze farther north in Malibu destroyed at least two homes.
The Marines have now been called in to help fight the blazes.

Yesterday's standoff in Giles County came to an abrupt end.
For six hours Barry Peters held police at bay, but when authorities tried to
get him out of the house... Peters turned a gun on himself.

Gun fire erupted in and around this Giles County home for the better part of
Inside was 43- year- old Barry Peters... armed with nearly half- a- dozen
weapons including an assault rifle.
Outside was a swat team... hoping to diffuse the situation.
Police watched as Peters started shooting aimlessly around the house.
And at one point he shot out from one of his windows and shattered the rear
windshield of this police cruiser.
Authorities had the home surrounded for hours... trying to negotiate with
Peters... hoping to bring him outside without anyone getting hurt.
Then they made the decision to force him out of the house.

In the 5th hour of the standoff, police shot twenty to thirty rounds of tear
gas into the home... practically through every window.

After they fired the tear gas... police gave Peters another chance to come
out, but to no avail.
Another hour passed... and officials finally went in, only to find that
Barry Peters had taken his own life.

Neighbors say Peters suffered from depression, but at this point, officials
aren't sure what triggered the incident.

Christopher Shawn Wheeler faces the maximum sentence for the murder of a
sheriff's deputy in December of 19-94.
Wheeler pled guilty in August to second degree murder and a related firearms
Yesterday the judge sentenced him to 43 years in prison.
Wheeler shot and killed deputy Clifford Dicker when Dicker tried to serve
him with arrest papers.
The defense was hoping Wheeler could serve a lesser sentence in a detention
center, saying he was a victim of a traumatic childhood and poor upbringing.

Wheeler was first charged with CAPITAL murder, which can carry the death
But the judge reduced the charge because of some legal technicalities.
The Montgomery County prosecutor started laying out the case against the man
accused of killing Virginia Tech student Alexander Defillipis last December.

The family of Alexander Defillipis watched as prosecutor Skip Schwab
placed a photograph on the table.
Defillipis was abducted from a Blacksburg convenience store last December
and shot four times.
Ben Lilly is one of three defendants in this case, the alleged trigger
man, and his attorneys argued the photo of the victim would prejudice the jury.

Circuit Court Judge Ray Grubbs did not grant the motion for a mistrial. He
said the use of the photo during opening arguments was reasonable, and did not
serve to inflame the jury. He did ask the prosecutor to put it aside during
testimony... testimony that is expected to continue for most of the week.

that's idled 26-thousand G-M workers in Canada.
The resulting parts shortage has forced G-M to send home another
18-thousand employees in the U-S and Mexico.
If a tentative agreement can be reached today, the union could
hold a ratification vote tomorrow and strikers could be back to work by the end
of the week.
The Justice Department wants a federal judge to order Virginia Military
Institute to explain its coeducation plans.
The department has requested a hearing, but the state apparently does not
think it has to produce a detailed plan to admit women.
Such a plan might go into things like whether keeping the school's strict
physical training requirements poses a hindrance to female cadets.
Senator John Warner visited Roanoke yesterday to pick an endorsement from a
coalition of Virginia agriculture representatives.
They made the announcement yesterday morning in Roanoke's Market Square, as
Warner announced a plan promising estate tax relief for farmers, and reform of
the clean water act.
Warner is still running comfortably ahead of his opponent.
But he did not want to say much about fellow Republican Bob Dole's dismal
place in the polls,
