Chris O'Donnel is surprisingly believable if a bit young in the role of Adam Hall, an attorney who returns to Mississippi to try and keep his racist grandfather out of the gas chamber.
His aunt Lee, Faye Dunaway, doesn't want to open up old secrets.
Lela Rochon is an aide who may have been sent to help Adam, or to hinder him.
Even the old reprobate himself, Sam Cayhall--played by Gene Hackman, doesn't give Adam any help. And that is part of the problem.
There is no believable reason for Hackman's character to be so reluctant to save himself. That element is never fully examined.
It's difficult to dislike Hackman even in an unlikable role.
I'm giving "The Chamber" a "B-". Although much of the movie deals with the death penalty, it doesn't have any take on the issue.
There's a lack of focus and the movie is generally depressing.
