Witnesses for the defense say it was Gary Barker who was handling guns and
talking big in the hours before a Virginia Tech student was shot... NOT Ben

threatened to shoot anyone who tried to stop him for driving without a license.

The owners of two convenience stores robbed that night also said it was

Barker is already serving time for his part in the murder, but has testified

Ben's younger brother Mark, who still awaits trial for the crime spree, told

The jury is expected to begin deliberations tomorrow.
A Halifax County man says he was scared for his life the night he shot and
killed his roommate.
Barry Dwight Thomas, Junior is charged with killing 33- year old Anthony
Meadows in March at the trailer home they shared.
The two lived there with their girlfriends.
Thomas testified Meadows had been arguing with both women, when he grabbed a
gun and asked Meadows to leave.
Thomas told the jury Meadows then lunged at him, and he fired the gun.
Prosecutors pointed to inconsistencies in Thomas' story and that of his
A verdict is expected tonight.
A fight at Halifax County high school ended this morning with three students
18- year old Craig Powell was the first to arrive at the Halifax County
He was followed by 18- year old Michael Ewing and a 16- year old juvenile.
Authorities still don't know what led to the fight. There were actually
three fights going on at the same time.

An accident this afternoon in Roanoke County sent two people to the

Democratic Congressional candidate Jeff Grey is blasting Republicans for
cuts in veterans benefits.
Grey is criticizing his opponent, incumbent G-O-P Congressman Bob Goodlatte

continue to help protect their interests.

Boucher for the 9th district Congressional seat.

hawkish stance on cutting federal spending.

Roberts also advocates closing most tax loopholes and serious restrictions

And while it may not be the biggest drain on the federal budget, he's got a

A local group says parts of our area are losing their heritage.
The Roanoke Valley Preservation Foundation has compiled a list of the 10
most endangered places here in Southwestern Virginia.
The group says each site is unique and is in danger of being overlooked.
A number of structures top the list... like the Burke Cabin on Clay Street
Another building in trouble-- the Claytor Clinic in the Historic Gainsboro.
But members also say the beauty of the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains
are being threatened by development.
And they fear the Roanoke River is being degraded by pollution and poor

The National Memorial to D-Day is still in the planning and fund-raising
Now it's been expanded to include a 25-thousand square-foot visitor's center
with its own museum, auditorium and research center.
The additional facilities have boosted the price by two million dollars.
So it's now an EIGHT- million dollar project to be built on 88-acres behind
Bedford Elementary School.
Bedford Delegate Lacy Putney pushed a 200-thousand dollar appropriation
through the House.

Tommy Morrison shocked the boxing world earlier this Fall when he announced
he planned to make a boxing comeback despite have the AIDS virus.

signed to fight MOrrison on November 3rd in Tokyo.
The fight contract has certain provisions to protect Morrison
