They're now calling it an outbreak....as seven people in the New River
Valley have been diagnosed with Legionnaires' Disease.

pneumonia...that, in some cases, is deadly.
Keith, that's because this bug-- the legionella bacteria-- is fast acting.
But while there are seven confirmed cases-- throughout Montgomery County,
Giles, and Floyd....it's important to note that five of those patients are

Finding the source of this bacteria is now a priority....there's no obvious

conditioning cooling towers, or ponds and moist soil.

Late this afternoon, the New River Valley Health Department held a news
conference about this..... Denise Allen joins us from our Blacksburg newsroom.
Connie the seven people infected with the bacteria appear to fit the

Health investigators are looking into these cases as well and may actually
find some previously unreported cases of Legionnaires Disease.

Legionnaire's Disease is rare in people under 30 unless they have a weakened

The elderly and people with chronic lung and kidney conditions are most
susceptible to this disease.
So, if you've got flu-symptoms, and you live in the New River Valley, just
play it safe and see a doctor-- to start antibiotics.
One note-- the disease got it's name from an outbreak in Philadelphia in
1976-- several people attending an American Legion convention became ill.

Jury deliberations continue at this hour in the Ben Lilly capital murder
More than 10 months ago, Virginia Tech students Alexander Deflippis was shot
and killed in the White Thorne section of Montgomery County and prosecutors put
a witness on the stand who said it was Ben Lilly who pulled the trigger.

A Danville family has taken down part of a roadside memorial to two children
who were killed in a traffic accident.
Raymond and Tammy Mustain put up the memorial, including a 900 pound statue
of the Virgin Mary, at the intersection of Route 265 and Elizabeth Street.
State transportation officials gave them until November first to take down
the statue, saying it's a potential traffic hazard.
The children's mother says the controversy has been a painful experience.

The building was renovated once when the College bought the old courthouse
from the county in 1987.
This 2-and-a half million dollar project includes a computer center and home
