Police in St. Petersburg, Florida say the chaos is calming down this morning following a night of rioting in a predominantly black neighborhood.

A crowd of several hundred set fires and threw rocks and bottles last night after a police officer fatally shot a man during a traffic stop.
Police officers in riot gear barricaded several streets and tried to contain the violence.
Local hospitals report several other injuries, including an officer shot in the arm.
The shooting that sparked the violence happened after two police officers stopped a car with two people inside.
The car allegedly lurched forward, hitting one of the officers, and the officers allegedly opened fire, striking the driver of the car.

They now say it's possible a fuel measuring device was responsible for the explosion that brought the plane down.
Federal agents are examining the device, called a fuel probe, to see if faulty wiring could have ignited the jet's center fuel tank.
The July disaster killed all 230 people aboard the plane.

Meantime, another set back for T-W-A yesterday, as the airline's chief executive, Jeffrey Erikson announced his resignation.

A convenience store owner testified Barker held a gun on HIM during a robbery the same night as the murder.
But prosecutor Skip Schwab pointed out Barker did NOT shoot, even though he had the opportunity. Tech student Alexander DeFilippis was shot four times just a couple of hours earlier.
Barker and Lilly's younger brother Mark have said Ben Lilly pulled the trigger.

Another case of Legionnaires' Disease has been reported in the New River Valley.
That brings the total number of cases to four.
Legionnaires is an acute form of pneumonia- that can be fatal.
The cases appear to be isolated-- the patients are from Montgomery County, Floyd and Giles.
Two are in critical condition, the others are stable.
Victims usually inhale airborne water droplets containing the bacteria.
Symptoms include fevers between 103 and 105 degrees.
State epi-demiologists are in the area now, working with local officials-- they're also investigating a rise in PNEUMONIA cases in the New River Valley, and don't know yet if they're related.

A Halifax County man could not persuade a jury he shot and killed a man in self defense.

The jury last night convicted Barry Dwight Thomas, Junior of voluntary manslaughter.
Authorities say he killed 33-year old Anthony Meadows in March at a trailer.
The two were apparently staying there with their girlfriends.
Thomas testified Meadows had been arguing with both women when he grabbed a gun and asked Meadows to leave.
Thomas told the jury Meadows' then lunged at him, and he fired the gun.
Prosecutors pointed to inconsistencies in Thomas' story and that of his girlfriend.
Thomas was sentenced to five years in prison.

It all started with what appeared to be a routine traffic stop of a car in a predominantly black neighborhood in st. petersburg.. one report says the car lurched forward into a police officer...and the officers responded by opening fire....killing the driver.
I SAW MY FRIENDS IN BACK OF THE CAR THROW THEIR HANDS UP....THEN I HEARD TWO SHOTS AND THEN I DIVED IN A STORE.

The shooting sparked immediate fighting ....which grew as night fell....until hundreds of people were in the streets confronting police with glass and bricks.
Police---using shields and riot gear to protect themselves....attempted to

contain the violence with barricades.
but that didn't stop =them= or camera crews in the area.... from being

hurt...
The crowd was so volatile....firefighters were kept from moving in to put out blazes set by the protesters....so cars and stores burned out of control.

A protestor was run down by a car driven by a Loomis delivery service employee.
The man was shaken up, but suffered only minor injuries.
Organizers are hoping to get a quarter of a million union members and social activists to protest at some 300 locations throughout Ontario.
The protest is against the Conservative provincial government's spending cuts to social services; including cuts to hospitals and education.

They're angry about higher tuition costs.
At Sydney University yesterday punches and kicks were thrown between students and police as Australia's Prime Minister entered the University for a graduation ceremony.
Shortly afterward, several students entered the ceremony venue and tried to disrupt proceedings, but were removed by police.
One police officer was injured and one student arrested.

New River Valley Health officials are reporting a FOURTH case of Legionnaires' Disease in the district.
Still though, they say the cases APPEAR to be isolated-- there's no apparent connection between them.
Legionnaires' is an acute form of pneumonia-- it can be spread though the air-- through moist soil, water taps, humidifiers or air conditioning cooling towers.
Two patients are from Montgomery County, one is from Floyd and the other is from Giles County.
Two are in critical condition, the others are stable.
Right now, state epidemiologists are working with the New River Valley Health Department-- they're also investigating a rise in pneumonia cases in the region.

He's charged in the death of a Virginia Tech student last December.
Yesterday the defense tried to prove that another man, Gary Barker was the more likely shooter.
Several witnesses testified they saw Barker AND Lilly's younger brother Mark handling guns in the hours before the shooting, however none of them saw Ben Lilly actually HOLDING a weapon.
Barker has already pled guilty, and Mark Lilly's trial is set for next month.

Now it's been expanded to include a 25-thousand square foot visitor's center with its own museum, auditorium and research center.
The additional facilities have boosted the price by two million dollars.

Bedford Delegate Lacy Putney pushed a 200-thousand dollar appropriation through the House.

The check's been a long time getting to Bedford, but Putney presented it to the D-Day foundation chairman yesterday.

The pails have been sold six to a package wrapped in cellophane with a label that says Happy Halloween.
It also includes the name of the company- Direct Source International.
The U-S Consumer Product Safety Commission says it found high levels of lead in black, yellow and red paint on the buckets.
