today after a night of rioting in St. Petersburg, Florida.
The violence began after a white police officer fatally shot a black

PERSONNEL. IT ALL BEGAN LATE THURSDAY WHEN TWO POLICE OFFICERS APPROACHED
THIS CAR, WHICH POLICE SAY WAS SPEEDING THROUGH TOWN. POLICE SAY THE DRIVER
REFUSED TO OBEY VERBAL COMMANDS TO ROLL DOWN THE DARKLY TINTED WINDOW AND COME
OUT OF THE CAR. WHEN THE CAR SUDDENLY LURCHED FORWARD TOWARDS THE OFFICER
STANDING IN FRONT OF IT, HE FIRED THROUGH THE WINDOW, KILLING THE 18-YEAR OLD
DRIVER. BUT SOMG WITNESWES SAY, THAT'S NOT THE WAY IT HAPPENED.
OTHER WITNESSES SAY THE CAR ONLY INCHED FORWARD, NOT NEARLY FAST ENOUGH TO RUN
SOMEONE DOWN. WHILE THE DETAILS OF WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED ARE DISPUTED, ONE
THING IS NOT-- THERE IS A HISTORY OF TENSION BETWEEN THE PEOPLE IN THIS MOSTLY
BLACK NEIGHBORHOOD AND THE MOSTLY WHITE POLICE FORCE.

A search is on for two crew members after a U-S Navy helicopter crashed in
the Persian Gulf.
Officials say one person was killed in the crash and nine others were
rescued and are being treated on the aircraft carrier Enterprise.
The chopper was based on the carrier and was on a routine
training exercise when it went down.
The aircraft was part of a contingent that arrived in the Gulf in
September after the latest confrontation with Iraq.
At this time the Navy says there's no evidence the helicopter was the target
of any hostile action.
Timothy McVeigh will be tried separately from fellow defendant Terry
Nichols in the Oklahoma City bombing case.
That is the decision announced in Denver this morning by the judge in the
The move is considered a victory for the defense, which had argued the two
would be presumed guilty by association.
McVeigh and Nichols have also reportedly given statements that incriminate
A jury is expected to begin deciding the fate of accused killer Ben Lilly
The defense rested its case in the yesterday, but not before trying to point

The jury last night convicted Barry Dwight Thomas, Junior of voluntary
Authorities say he killed 33-year old Anthony Meadows in March at a trailer.
The two were apparently staying there with their girlfriends.
Thomas testified Meadows had been arguing with both women when he grabbed a
gun and asked Meadows to leave.
Thomas told the jury Meadows' then lunged at him, and he fired the gun.
Prosecutors pointed to inconsistencies in Thomas' story and that of his
Thomas was sentenced to five years in prison.
State health authorities are in the New River Valley examining a sudden
outbreak of Legionnaires' Disease.
Legionnaires is an acute form of pneumonia- that can be fatal.
Four cases have now been reported but they appear to be isolated-- the
patients are from Montgomery County, Floyd and Giles.
Two are in critical condition, the others are stable.
Victims usually inhale airborne water droplets containing the bacteria.
Symptoms include fevers between 103 and 105 degrees.
Health officials are also investigating a rise in PNEUMONIA cases in the New
River Valley, and don't know yet if they're related.

Two Israeli soldiers were killed and four injured in a road-side bomb
attack early this morning in Israeli- occupied southern Lebanon.
The Shiite Muslim group Hezbollah has claimed responsiblity.
The attack was launched to mark the first anniversary of the assassination
of the former leader of the Islamic Jihad.
Israel's secret service organization reportedly carried out the

Nearly 100 days after the T-W-A Flight 800 disaster, investigators now say
it's possible a fuel measuring device was responsible for the explosion that
brought the plane down.

faulty wiring could have ignited the jet's center fuel tank.

An Ohio company is recalling nearly 12 thousand plastic Halloween candy
buckets because of a lead paint hazard.

label that says Happy Halloween.
It also includes the name of the company- Direct Source International.
The U-S Consumer Product Safety Commission says it found high levels of lead
in black, yellow and red paint on the buckets.
The agency says it can cause lead poisoning if a young child eats the paint.
Consumers are urged to return the items to stores for refunds.
It's a Top Ten List designed to increase public awareness.
The Roanoke Valley Preservation Foundation has released a list of the 10 most
endangered places in the area.
Most of the sites listed are structures... but a couple deal with the area's

And finally this noontime...it seems dog isn't just MAN's best friend.
Purdy is a Dalmatian who lives with the Hamlin family near Seattle. She has
adopted four kittens as her own and is even nursing them.
Family members say the kittens' mother just didn't take to her litter--and
so Purdy's been filling in as a surrogate. The dog is quite protective of the
kittens, staying with them nearly 24 hours a day.
The family hopes to find good homes for the kittens but admits it will be
hard to separate them from Purdy.
