The violence began after a white police officer fatally shot a black
motorist.
Ten people were injured, twenty-eight buildings were burned, and nearly two
dozen arrested.

OUT OF THE CAR. WHEN THE CAR SUDDENLY LURCHED FORWARD TOWARDS THE OFFICER
STANDING IN FRONT OF IT, HE FIRED THROUGH THE WINDOW, KILLING THE 18-YEAR OLD
DRIVER. BUT SOMG WITNESWES SAY, THAT'S NOT THE WAY IT HAPPENED.
OTHER WITNESSES SAY THE CAR ONLY INCHED FORWARD, NOT NEARLY FAST ENOUGH TO RUN
SOMEONE DOWN. WHILE THE DETAILS OF WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED ARE DISPUTED, ONE
THING IS NOT-- THERE IS A HISTORY OF TENSION BETWEEN THE PEOPLE IN THIS MOSTLY

A search is on for two crew members after a U-S Navy helicopter crashed in
the Persian Gulf.

Officials say one person was killed in the crash and nine others were
rescued and are being treated on the aircraft carrier Enterprise.
The chopper was based on the carrier and was on a routine
training exercise when it went down.
The aircraft was part of a contingent that arrived in the Gulf in
September after the latest confrontation with Iraq.
At this time the Navy says there's no evidence the helicopter was the target
of any hostile action.

would be presumed guilty by association.

later today.

A convenience store owner testified Barker held a gun on HIM during a
robbery the same night as the murder.
But prosecutor Skip Schwab pointed out Barker did NOT shoot, even though he
had the opportunity.
Tech student Alexander DeFilippis was shot four times just a couple of hours
earlier.
Barker and Lilly's younger brother Mark have said Ben Lilly pulled the
trigger.

A Halifax County man could not persuade a jury he shot and killed a man in
self defense.

The jury last night convicted Barry Dwight Thomas, Junior of voluntary
manslaughter.
Authorities say he killed 33-year old Anthony Meadows in March at a trailer.
The two were apparently staying there with their girlfriends.
Thomas testified Meadows had been arguing with both women when he grabbed a
gun and asked Meadows to leave.
Thomas told the jury Meadows' then lunged at him, and he fired the gun.
Prosecutors pointed to inconsistencies in Thomas' story and that of his
girlfriend.
Thomas was sentenced to five years in prison.

State health authorities are in the New River Valley examining a sudden
outbreak of Legionnaires' Disease.
Legionnaires is an acute form of pneumonia- that can be fatal.
Four cases have now been reported but they appear to be isolated-- the
patients are from Montgomery County, Floyd and Giles.
Two are in critical condition, the others are stable.
Victims usually inhale airborne water droplets containing the bacteria.
Symptoms include fevers between 103 and 105 degrees.
Health officials are also investigating a rise in PNEUMONIA cases in the New
River Valley, and don't know yet if they're related.

the defense statement followed the last plaintiff lawyer, who said simpson
had an uncontrollable rage regarding nicole...that he was obsessed with her
and wanted to know her every move.
simpson listened to the lawyer, sometimes rolled his eyes, shook his head and
apparently mouthed, that s not true.
The next step calling witnesses.
the plaintiff s will be first and they ll try to do what prosecutors
couldn t: show that O-J Simpson had a motive and enough time to kill nicole
brown and ron goldman.

Israel's secret service organization reportedly carried out the
assassination.

brought the plane down.

An Ohio company is recalling nearly 12 thousand plastic Halloween candy
buckets because of a lead paint hazard.

Frankenstein heads.

The pails have been sold six to a package wrapped in cellophane with a
label that says Happy Halloween.
It also includes the name of the company- Direct Source International.
The U-S Consumer Product Safety Commission says it found high levels of lead
in black, yellow and red paint on the buckets.

Purdy is a Dalmatian who lives with the Hamlin family near Seattle. She has
adopted four kittens as her own and is even nursing them.
Family members say the kittens' mother just didn't take to her litter--and
so Purdy's been filling in as a surrogate. The dog is quite protective of the
kittens, staying with them nearly 24 hours a day.
The family hopes to find good homes for the kittens but admits it will be
hard to separate them from Purdy.
