The most recent was in Botetourt County in which a man in a stolen car fled from State Police, hit two other motorists, one of whom died.
In that case, the state police broke off the pursuit before the accident.
But a viewer from Evington wrote: When the police say that they abandoned a chase because they were approaching a heavily traveled area, I ask: "How does the individual being chased know that they are no longer being pursued?"...I realize, of course, that is not reasonable or lawful for an offender to attempt to elude arrest by initiating a chase situation. However, once begun, what outcome can one reasonably expect from a vehicle chase? Since the offender is being chased -- perhaps
he/she might elude the police --- or, wreck the vehicle --- or, strike a
pedestrian, --- or, collide with another vehicle. I believe that police

should use teamwork for establishing traffic roadblocks to make the arrest, or simply proceed to the offender's home or work to arrest them, or heaven forbid, simply give-in and wait for another day if the arrest is for a simple traffic violation.
