The Legionnaire's Disease outbreak in the New River Valley has claimed its
first victim.
A spokesperson at Columbia Lewis Gale says the elderly Giles County man died
last night.
Two other patients remain hospitalized.
One is critical, the other is in stable condition.
Officials are not releasing the patients' names.

First Union's mortgage servicing center and the 120 jobs that go along with
it will be moved to Raleigh..
The bank will make other jobs available for those who don't transfer, mostly
at its operations center in Roanoke County.

fewer people working in downtown Roanoke.

The body of a Pittsylvania County woman was discovered in the trunk of a car
shortly after her husband took his own life during a standoff, early this
morning.

It all began last night when 35- year old Wilbur Gilbert Scearce led police
on a high speed chase to his home in Ringgold.
Scearce apparently ended the pursuit by pulling into his driveway and
pointing a gun at his head.
Authorities negotiated with Scearce for several hours before he fatally shot
himself around one- thirty.
Sheriff's officials have not said how 33- year old Tammy Scearce was killed.

Trigon Blue Cross Blue Shield is becoming a for-profit company.
The state's largest health insurer got permission today from the
State Corporation Commission to change from a mutual company owned
by its policyholders to a public company that would be traded on
Wall Street.
Trigon policyholders approved the change in September.
Trigon says it needs to make the change to raise money to
compete with large, out-of-state insurers moving into Virginia.
