(( The Institute of Certified Financial Planners has some suggestions on how
seniors can use their house to help out when cash is tight.
For starters, you can sell your home, especially if it's the one you raised
your children in...it may be too big and too expensive to own now.
You can also rent your home and buy a second less expensive one.
But make sure the rent is sufficiently greater than your new mortgage
payments.
Also renting out part of your home is an option.
A home equity loan is a good stop-gap method to get cash needed for sudden
expenses like medical bills.
Be aware though, that you're putting you home at risk if you can't pay back
the loan.
Two more complicated options are reverse mortgages and sale leasebacks.
Discuss these first with your financial advisor.
I'm Len Besthoff with this week's edition of Common Sense.
Let's send it back to the newsdesk.
