state champs the ONLY thing that has eluded them for three years.
((DAVID WHEAT:))
Mickey McGuigan's Blacksburg team will finish either 7th or tied for 7th out
of 8 teams in the district, but the Lady Indians truly feel anything can happen
in the Blue Ridge tourney.
((MICKEY MCGUIGAN:))
In the Dogwood, Tunstall and Gretna are tied for first. The regular season
title will be decided tomorrow night when the two meet on the Lady Hawks floor.
((STANDUP:))
The revival has an eerie beat to the tune of a 9 and OH district record and a
13 and 4 overall mark.
((ROB BENNETT:))
Bennett's bunch lacked height until Melissa Page transferred from Alleghany
this season. She's averaging 13 points a game, but 1995 Pioneer player of the
year Joann Helton is the go to girl who wants to go to the top.

For the past week, the group's been involved in an archeological dig in
Buchanan.... near the FUTURE home of the Virginia Forge plant.
The team's already found a series of refuse pits... plus a number of
artifacts... including pottery pieces and arrow heads.
Expedition leaders also believe the village might have served as an Indian
burial ground.

((TOM KLATKA/VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF HISTORIC RESOURCES: BASED ON RESEARCH AT
OTHER SITES, WE DO KNOW THAT NATIVE AMERICANS BURIED THEIR DEAD WITHIN THE
VILLAGE ITSELF-- USUALLY RIGHT OUTSIDE THE HOUSES. AND SO IT'S CONCEIVABLE THAT
IN THIS VILLAGE ITSELF, THERE WOULD BE A NUMBER OF BURIALS... BUT WE HAVEN'T
FOUND ANY YET.))

Klatka says the main objective is to map out the boundaries of the village.
Virginia Forge now owns the land... but has promised to avoid any
construction on the site.
