The Warners go head to head-- it's their last joint appearance before the
voters have THEIR say Tuesday.

With this-- the last weekend before the election-- John and Mark Warner
decided to spend their evening together--
The U-S Senate candidates were in Virginia Beach at a debate sponsored by
The first question of the evening, immediately put John Warner on the
Virginia N-double-A-C-P president Paul Gillis accused two of the senator's
staff members of using a racial slur in reference to the debate.

Governor George Allen has lost a court battle with the General Assembly over
the state budget.

The Virginia Supreme Court says Allen's line- item veto power was NOT
limited by the legislature.
The Democrat-dominated Assembly sent Allen only the portions of last fiscal
year's spending bill that had been changed in the 1996 session.
Allen says that limited his ability to veto "pork barrel projects."

Brazilian investigators have two questions after a jetliner crash.

Recovery crews in (Sow Paul-o) Sao Paulo found nearly nine pounds of
cocaine in the debris.
The drug was in packages found near part of the landing gear.
The plane went down yesterday in a residential section, killing 101
people...that includes all 96 people on board the plane, and five on the
American car makers formally acknowledged today that passenger side
airbags can be killers, setting into motion what may be a lengthy process to
make them safer.

Ford and Chrysler joining forces to admit that air bags are not as safe as they

caused by airbags.. which can explode at up to 200 miles per hour.
Along with mailing letters, America's largest automakers are drawing up warning
labels urging parents to buckle their kids up in the back seat.

The big three will also also create an airbag with a lower explosion speed
for the canadian market.
But those new airbags will not be available here in the U-S until federal
regulations are changed. and that may take some time.

The number of patients now stands at 15- one of those patients died last

Hershey says it's still much too early to publicly release those theories.
He says medical investigators will continue testing in various locations
throughout the New River Valley.
All the cases appear to have occurred two to two-and-a-half weeks ago.
The two cases confirmed today include an elderly man and woman, both are in
stable condition at Radford Community Hospital.
Management at the G-E Drive Systems plant would like its 11-hundred
salaried employees to ask themselves if their jobs are really necessary.
Without offering any incentives beyond normal retirement benefits, the
Company has announced a "Voluntary Job Elimination Program."
In a letter to salaried employees- -dated one week ago- -General Manager
Russ Shade outlines the cost- saving measure "aimed at those employees who can
suggest how to eliminate their job."
Applicants must sign a statement that says: "...I understand that my job
will be eliminated, with any remaining work assigned to others and I will be
removed from the payroll."
Human Resource Manager Mike Allee says it would appeal to employees who are
close to retirement or may have a job opportunity elsewhere and want to collect
A Roanoke man is accused of dousing a popular downtown restaurant with
Police say 21 year old Larry Hicks was spotted at about two this morning
pouring gas on a back door and the walls of Corned Beef and Company on
Fire did NOT break out.
Hicks took off when a worker spotted him- and led police on a chase.
Hicks had reportedly been in the restaurant earlier in the evening and was
asked to leave after he had a fight with another customer.

A new non-invasive pre-natal test is offering some hope in detecting
genetic abnormalities in unborn babies.
The most common tests currently used are Amnioscentesis and CVS.
Both procedures carry a small risk of miscarriage.
But as reported in the Journal "Nature Genetics"-- a new blood test might
elminate that risk.
Researchers at the University of California made the discovery on
collecting fetal cells from the mother's blood.
With work, they believe the test may be able to uncover genetic
disorders-- that up to now-- have gone undetected.
Think of all the loose change you accumulate throughout your house.
At one Pittsylvania County school pennies are being put to use-- for a
fundraiser and a math lesson.
Thousands of pennies have been collected at Blairs Middle School in hopes
of raising at least 26-thousand dollars to buy air conditioning for the
