Two more confirmed cases of Legionaires disease in the New River Valley-
That brings the total number to 15.
Health officials say they're starting to get a better idea of how some of
the patients picked up the bacteria.
But officials are not elaborating.
It's Warner versus warner in Virginia Beach tonight. The two candidates are
debating. We'll have highlights.
Plus the latest Christmas stamp at the post office came from an art

The final U-S Senate debate started tonight with accusations of racial slurs
and ended with threats of re-segregating Virginia.
John and Mark Warner spent this last weekend before the election in Virginia
Beach at a debate sponsored by the N-Double-A-C-P.
The first question of the evening, immediately put John Warner on the
Virginia N-double-A-C-P president Paul Gillis accused two of the senator's
staff members of using a racial slur in reference to the debate.

There's more legal wrangling in the bidding war for Conrail.
Norfolk Southern today asked a judge to block a provision in the merger deal
agreed upon by C-S-X and Conrail that would make it difficult for any other
offers to be heard.
N-S put in a competing bid for Conrail last week.
It tops a previous offer by C-S-X by more than a BILLION dollars.
A Conrail merger with Norfolk Southern or C-S-X would create the nation's
third- largest railroad.
The court will hear Norfolk Southern request on Monday.
Two more confirmed cases brings the number of Legionnaires patients in the
New River Valley to 15.
But there IS progress in the investigation to find the cause of the

Hershey says it appears all of the cases occurred up to two-and-a-half weeks
A key witness took the stand in the O-J Simpson civil trial today.
But as Elizabeth Kaledin reports he only testified for a few minutes.

Lange took the stand for a second day. Lange was one of the original
detectives on the criminal case under cross examination. Simpson's lawyer
Robert Baker stuck to expected themes of sloppy police work and careless
evidence collection. Baker wanted to know why detectives had not collected
a small piece of paper found near Nicole Brown Simpson's head and why there was
so little dirt on the cap and bloody glove found at the scene. Baker
asked Lange if it ever occured to him that the items had been planted at the
scene. Lange replied certainly not.
In the big suprise of the day, Detective Phillip Vannater was called to the
stand and was there for little more than thirty minuites before being
dismissed. It was expected that Vannater would be grilled under cross
examination about blood evidence, but plaintiff's attorneys only asked
Vannater a few quick questions and then let him go and Simpson's attorneys
were unable to bring up evidence not introduced by the Plaintiffs.

The jury convicts a man of killing former Los Angeles Raiders cheerleader
and model- Lisa Sobek.
Charles Rathbun was found guilty of first degree murder and rape.
Sobek's family burst into tears as the verdict was read.

Sobek disappeared in November of 1995 after she met Rathbun for a photo
Nine days later Rathbun led police to a shallow grave he had dug for her in
the Mountains outside of Los Angeles.

All Boeing 737's will undergo an emergency inspection.
Boeing today sent an urgent bulletin to airlines- recommending that all
Boeing 737's be taken to maintenance facilities for a one time rudder
inspection within the next ten days-
The recommendations come after testing revealed the plane's backup rudder
control system can jam in extreme testing conditions.
Boeing says the jamming is highly unlikely, but issued a bulletin after
looking at testing done by the NTSB.
An investigation into possible rudder malfunction was prompted by two
Boeing 737 crashes- on near Pittsburgh two years ago-

Salem Police are looking for help in identifying a man found dead in a
church in Salem yesterday.
The body was inside the Tabernacle Baptist Church on East Main Street.
Police say the man had been dead about two days.

His height: about six feet.
He had brown hair and brown eyes.
He was wearing a black T-shirt, cloth shorts and black tennis shoes.

Management at the G-E Drive Systems plant wants 11-hundred salaried
employees to ask themselves if their jobs are really necessary.
Without offering any incentives beyond normal retirement, the Company
announced a "Voluntary Job Elimination Program."
In a letter to salaried employees dated one week ago, General Manager Russ
Shade outlines the cost-saving measure "aimed at those employees who can
suggest how to eliminate their job."
Applicants must sign a statement that says: "...I understand that my job
will be eliminated, with any remaining work assigned to others and I will be
removed from the payroll."
