Lynchburg fire officials are looking into the cause of a house fire that
left one man dead this afternoon.
Neighbors reported smoke coming from the doors and windows of 11-19 Toledo
Avenue around 1:45.
Firefighters forced their way into the home, and found the elderly victim
lying between the kitchen and the living room.
Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.

St. Clair says the man normally visits his wife in a nursing home every

Authorities have "not" released his identity, but he was believed to be
about 80 years old.

A Halifax County elementary school teacher has been released on bond after
being arrested yesterday on drug and various other charges.
37- year- old Henry Richardson Junior was charged with drunk driving,
possession of marijuana, and possession of a concealed handgun.
Richardson teaches at Clover Elementary.
He was arrested in front of Halifax County Middle School.
This is the second time this year a Halifax County teacher has been arrested
on drug charges.
In June, 37- year- old Dorothy Ferrell was arrested for possession of crack

The Pentagon is defending U.S. pilot who launched a missile at a radar site
in Iraq yesterday.
Iraq says nothing happened.

The Pentagon report says an F-16 was patrolling the Iraqi "no-fly" zone when
the pilot's instruments said he'd been targeted by a radar site.
The instruments were wrong, but officials say it was proper to respond to
what the pilot thought was a threat.

Iraqi officials say no incident of any kind has occurred in Iraqi air space.

Dallas Don Moody entered the service in mid-January of 1944. His family
called him Don, but the government knew him as Dallas.
He served on a plane similar to this B-24 Liberator.
During his nine months in the service he wrote 250 letters to his family in
Vinton and his mother saved every one.
The letters often contained code words--for instance he always signed his
letters "Don", except when he went on a mission, then it was "Dallas."
After his death his letters were turned into a book called "An Aerial Gunner

These letters chronicled his service from basic training up to his third
mission--a mission from which he would not return.
Elma says he left the Roanoke Valley a boy and the letters revealed his
Don Moody died a shortly before his 19th birthday.

Renovations to the Jackson Middle School caused some controversy last year.
But the school opened for classes in September and today the neighborhood
was invited in to share their memories of the old school and become a part of

section that was built in the 1920's.
Officials say the construction brings the 70 year old school up to modern

First Union will transfer its Mortgage Service Center from downtown Roanoke
to Raleigh, leaving the bank with barely any employees in the tower that bears
The 120 displaced people will be offered other jobs with the bank, mostly at
its Roanoke County operations center.
Personnel at the region's largest health care provider are looking at union
membership because of concerns about how a reorganization has affected patient
The Carilion Health System says quality patient care is its number one
priority, and union interference is contrary to the best environment for its
employees and patients.
Premier Bankshares of Bluefield is merging with First Virginia Banks in a
160- million dollar stock swap.
The deal is not expected to affect Premier's 400- plus workforce.
But jobs will be lost in South Boston, where Georgia Pacific is closing its
particle board plant.
Georgia Pacific says it's doing this because of market conditions and the
Best Products is going out of business.
The troubled retailer has stores in Roanoke and Lynchburg, each with 55 full
and part time employees.

The process begins with the snap- shots themselves.
Karen Harold wanted something different... so she decided to cut her photos
into various shapes.
But scissors won't cut it for Emily Honts.
She's the president of the Botetourt County Historical Society.
Her pictures are very old... so she selected a simple matting procedure.
From there, the photos are placed on acid- free posterboard... which will
help keep the snap- shots colorful.

She went back a year later and completed the walk, alone and in secret, but
