The criminal charges stem from a fight back in August.
A Montgomery County grand jury returned nine indictments this afternoon.
Six current players and one former player face misdemeanor charges of
assault and battery.
Another player-- Angelo Harrison is charged with a FELONY-- attempted
In an UNRELATED incident-- dating back to last July-- player Brad Baylor was
charged with abduction, also a felony.
Today, head coach Frank Beamer issued some suspensions, after meeting with
Athletic Director Dave Braine and Tech president Paul Torgersen.

The fight outside Squires Student Center seriously injured two track team
Blacksburg police conducted a two- month investigation, interviewing about
As for the incident involving Brad Baylor, a 19 year- old UVA student
claims Baylor forced him into an apartment and made him drink large amounts of
alcohol under threat of bodily injury.
Blacksburg police found the teen lying unconscious on a sidewalk.

Over the last 2 decades, when the nation chose the president of one party,

With Virgil Goode going to Washington as a Congressman, his State Senate
seat is up for grabs.

Goode won the fifth district Congressional race with 60-percent of the vote.
He was cautious at his headquarters in Glade Hill last night before

Campbell County residents overwhelmingly said "cheers" last night by
passing a mixed drink referendum.
Voters there passed the measure by a 5 to 1 margin yesterday.
The new law will allow restaurants to serve mixed alcoholic drinks in
addition to wine and beer.

Meanwhile in Bedford County, college administrator Robert Bashore
(BAY-shore) won a tight race for the District Four supervisor's seat.
Bashore edged out businessman John White by about 130 votes in the special
election to replace Wayne Newcomb.
President Clinton returned to Washington today to a victory
rally and the impending resignations of four cabinet members and maybe his
Chief of Staff.

toward an agreement on how to divide up Conrail and avoid a messy bidding war.

The new agreement doesn't exceed Norfolk Southern's offer on a per- share
Still, it could be hard for Norfolk Southern to come out ahead.
Barry Cohen, an analyst with Bear Stearns, explains that the C-S-X Conrail
deal is extremely complicated and stacked in favor of C-S-X.
Cohen says, for example, that the C-S-X- Conrail merger could get approved
with only a small percentage of Conrail shareholders voting in favor of it.
But another railroad expert we spoke with says the latest C-S-X offer still
Conrail shareholders will vote on the merger next month.

Argentine police shot and killed SEVEN men today-- after an armed gang

Four police officers were injured, in the 90-minute shoot-out.
They're still searching for gang members who escaped.

A North Carolina woman is walking all the way to New York to help abused
women, and to get her children back.
Michelle Buisch (bush) is walking from Asheboro, North Carolina to New York
to prove she wants her children.
She says she moved to North Carolina to escape an abusive relationship, and
then lost custody of her two children because she couldn't make it to back to
New York to go to court.

Danville Regional Medical Center is fighting back-- against accusations
from Virginia's largest health insurer.
Trigon Blue Cross Blue Shield says it plans to drop the non-profit hospital
from its network at the end of December.
Trigon says the hospital's costs are approximately 30 percent higher than
comparable facilities in the area.
