INDICTED today by a County Grand Jury.

A Montgomery County grand jury has returned indictments against nine
Virginia Tech football players. All but one are still on the team.
Among those named: All American Defensive End Cornell Brown.
The charges stem from a fight outside Squires Student Center in August.

Keith, the brawl seriously injured two Tech track team members. It
apparently happened as a group of people were leaving a party.

A visibly upset coach Frank Beamer announced player suspensions as a result
of their charges.
He stressed the suspensions are not an indication of guilt or innocence, but
punishment for the players putting themselves in a position of facing criminal

Five of the Hokies charged with misdemeanor assault will be suspended only
for this Saturday's East Carolina game.
Greg Melvin is no longer on the team, and Brian Edmonds already served his
Angelo Harrison faces a felony charge and is suspended for the season.
As is Brad Baylor, for an unrelated felony abduction charge.

The two- year struggle by John Warner to turn back challengers ended closer
than any polls suggested.
Many voters favored the Republican because of the possibility he'd head the
powerful Senate Armed Services Committee.
But in the morning- after analysis, Warner now says it looks like South
Carolina's Strom Thurmond won't give up the chairmanship.

A North Carolina woman is walking to New York to raise awareness of battered
women, and problems in child custody cases.
Michelle Buisch (bush) is walking from Asheboro, North Carolina to New York
to prove she wants her children.
She says she moved to North Carolina to escape an abusive relationship, and
then lost custody of her two children because she couldn't make it to back to
New York to go to court.

people to walk part of the way with her to show their support.
She'll leave the Turning Point shelter at eight o'clock tomorrow morning.
Virgil Goode walked away with 60- percent of the Fifth District vote.
The 50- year old Democrat will now plug his belief in a balanced budget
amendment and Medicare as a Congressman.
Teresa Hamilton has reaction from Goode and one of the lawmakers who'd like

REPUBLICANS are still looking for someone to make a run at Virgil Goode's

Dudley has yet to make a decision, but says he's received lots of

Dudley was once a high school classmate of Virgil Goode.
He has served as the 9th District Delegate for nearly three years.
Campbell County business owners are celebrating the passage of a mixed-
drinks referendum for their area.
Voters there passed the measure by a 5 to 1 margin yesterday.
The new law will allow restaurants to serve mixed alcoholic drinks in
addition to wine and beer.

Meanwhile in Bedford County, college administrator Robert Bashore
(BAY-shore) won a tight race for the District Four supervisor's seat.
Bashore edged out businessman John White by about 130 votes in the special
election to replace Wayne Newcomb.
On Wall Street the Dow finished above the 61 hundred mark for the first
time--a jump of 96 points to close at 61 hundred 77.
NASDAQ was up 16 points.
After a brief pause, the bidding war between two Virginia railroads for
Conrail has gone from better to worse.

Len Besthoff says executives from Norfolk Southern and C-S-X are now
engaging in their own form of hand- to- hand combat.
Keith it all began last month when Conrail and C-S-X stunned Norfolk
Southern with their merger announcement.
Then Norfolk Southern came back with a much more lucrative bid for Conrail.
C-S-X and Conrail have amended their merger agreement so Conrail
stockholders will get more money for their shares.
It still doesn't exceed the offer from Norfolk Southern, one of the largest
employers in our area.
But the complex nature of the merger agreement could make it tough for N-S.
The new deal says Conrail directors must support the the C-S-X merger
through next JULY.
It also restricts C-S-X and Conrail from discussing deals with other
But even with all this, the deal will still come down to a vote by Conrail
shareholders next month.
One analyst says he has spoken with 10 people who each own more than 50,000
shares of Conrail...and all of them favor the N-S offer.
Keith in a release late this afternoon N-S says the amended agreement
between C-S-X and Conrail comes as no surprise.
N-S adds it will take all the steps necessary to ensure that Conrail
shareholders are offered a fair deal.

and one former Virginia Tech football players were indicted by a Montgomery
County grand jury.
Seven are charged with misdemeanors and two with felonies.

The University of Virginia has also imposed a suspension on one of it's
UVa wide receiver derrick Byrd has been suspended by head coach George
Welsh for Virginia's next two games for a violation of team rules.
The junior will not be in uniform for the Clemson game this saturday or or
the North Carolina contest November 16th.
Byrd has played in all 8 Virginia Games this season.
Violations have also found a way on to the college basketball court.
Today, UCLA coach Jim Harrick was fired after the NCAA ruled he had violated
policy regarding ethical conduct last month during a recruiting dinner.
