Just three hours before a death row inmate was scheduled to die, Governor
Allen commutes Joseph Payne's death sentence.
You're watching NEWS-7 Primetime on WEFC, I'm Connie Stevens.
Joseph Payne had been slated to die by lethal injection at 9-o'clock
tonight at the Greensville Correctional Center.
Earlier today the Supreme Court denied Payne's request for appeal.
So it was up to Governor Allen-- who commuted the sentence.
He said he gave no weight to four jurors who helped convict Payne and then
asked for clemency.
Allen turned the death sentence into life without parole.
In 1986, Payne was convicted of killing a fellow inmate by dousing him
with paint thinner and setting him on fire.
He was serving a life sentence for murder and robbery at the time of the

Today, Head coach Frank Beamer is taking the heat from all sides, after
suspending seven players.
An attorney for two players, Angelo Harrison and Brad Baylor says the

It has been a whirlwind of diplomacy for Christopher, who has travelled

along with commerce secretary Mickey Kantor, Energy Secretary Hazel
O'Leary and Transportation Secretary, Federico Pena.

A Nigerian jet carrying 141 people has been missing for several hours now,
after losing contact with air traffic controllers en route to Lagos.
A search is under way for the Boeing 727, but darkness is
hampering the effort.
The jet was on a 50-minute flight.
It was a spectacular fire this afternoon, about a half-hour outside of
Louisville, Kentucky-- at the Heaven Hill Distillery.
The fire began in the warehouse, and quickly swept through several
buildings, sending flames hundreds of feet in the air, as the distillery's
Burning whiskey run-off spilled into a creek-- setting the creek on fire.
More than a hundred firefighters worked to fight the blaze--
Nearby homes were evacuated-- and no one was injured.
Virginia's Explore Park is looking for a new director.
Today, Rupert Cutler announced he's leaving to work with a new group, the
Western Virginia Land Trust.
Cutler joined the Explore staff six years ago, and became executive director
following the departure of Bern Ewert.
As Explore opens a spur from the Blue Ridge Parkway, a restaurant and a new
welcome center, Cutler says the living history museum needs a different kind of

Last week we told you how nurses may set up a union at two Roanoke
They point to a system wide reorganization by the hospitals' parent company,
the Carilion Health System.
Some nurses believe it has stretched Carilion's resources too thin and
impacted patient care.
Alma Walker has been in and out of Carilion's Roanoke hospitals for the past
eight- to- ten years, suffering from chronic heart disease.
She says during the past year or so she's noticed a change in the way
patients are treated in their hospital rooms.
