it's anything but friendly as the billion dollar deal keeps growing in the
Norfolk Southern - C-S-X bidding war for Conrail.

Norfolk Southern has now upped the ante to buy Conrail--just two days after
C-S-X sweetened the pot for the Philadelphia-based freight railroad.
So what does this mean? Len Besthoff sorts it out for us.

(( Norfolk Southern is increasing its hostile bid for Conrail to 10- billion-
dollars, roughly a 10- percent increase.
That tops an offer from cross- state rival C-S-X by roughly a billion- and-
a- half- dollars.
Even with this new N-S bid, analysts differ on the what kind of an effect it
Some say it will win over shareholders at Conrail, the dominant railroad in

written in a way that will prevent nearly any other offer from being heard.

The FBI is adamantly denying allegations that it was a Navy Missile that
brought down TWA- Flight 800 off New York.

announcing that a U.S. Secret Service Agent passed along a document that proves
what has been rumored since the July 17th crash....that flight 800 was
downed by friendly fire.
Angry federal officials don't give any credence to Salinger's story.

Bowles replaces Leon Panetta--
Panetta says it's been a great journey- but says he's resigning to return
to California, to spend more time with his family.
A former state delegate from Bristol faces charges relating to alleged
incidents involving five teenagers.
Bristol police have charged 44 year-old John Clyde Brown with attempted
forcible sodomy of one boy.
He's also charged with giving alcohol to four other teenage boys.
Police say all of the alleged incidents took place at Brown's home.
Brown is a former mayor of Bristol.
He tried unsuccessfully to unseat Congressman Rick Boucher in 1988.
He's currently on paid administrative leave from his job as athletic
director at Virginia High School.
What may have felt like a tornado, was just very high winds and rain in
Henry County today..
This is what it looked like at the Sentry Mobile Home Park near Axton at

A civil liberties group says it WILL sue a Bedford County school which it
claims has banned Rush Limbaugh books from the classroom.
Nine-year old Jason Gardner says his teachers at Montvale Elementary have
prevented him TWICE from reading Limbaugh material he's brought from home.
Gardner's case has been taken over by the Rutherford Institute, which told
the school to reverse that policy or face a lawsuit.
The school's lawyer responded today, saying "the facts and the law are on
our side and no amount of threats and chest thumping" will alter that.
A Rutherford lawyer told News-7 quote-- "somebody in this case is lying and
it's not my client."
The Institute plans to file a new complaint in federal court next week.
A friendly merger between two of the largest phone companies in the eastern
U-S is nearly complete.
Bell Atlantic says in a vote this morning shareholders overwhelmingly
approved combining with Nynex (NINE-ex) of New York.
Nynex shareholders gave the deal the O-K earlier this week.
The combined company will be the nation's second- largest communications
It will be called Bell Atlantic, headquartered in New York.
Bell Atlantic has about 12- hundred employees in our area.
The merger is not expected to have a major impact on them.
The propsed airport for Rockbridge County was grounded at the polls Tuesday.
The plan to build an airstrip in a field north of Lexington lost by a THREE
to one margin.
Airport supporters say the project is now dead.
The citizens group that fought it says they're ready to fight again.

The new president of Hollins College formally took office today.
Janet Rasmussen (ras-MEW-sin) was inducted as the ninth president of the
150-year-old woman's college.
She asked each student to focus this year on one of 12 "areas of concern",
mentioned at last year's United Nations Conference on Women.
They include violence against women, inadequate health care and education.
Rasmussen also announced two anonymous gifts to the school:
500-thousand-dollars for a new chair of the science department, and
250-thousand dollars for new equipment in a multi-media classroom.

The devastating weather in Henry County was not enough to stop a celebration
in Collinsville this afternoon.
Hundreds of residents... along with local and state officials were on hand
for the dedication of the new Henry County Courthouse.
