That tops an offer from cross- state rival C-S-X by roughly a billion- and-
a- half- dollars.
Even with this new N-S bid, analysts differ on the what kind of an effect it
will have.
Some say it will win over shareholders at Conrail, the dominant railroad in
the northeast.
Others believe the original deal inked between C-S-X and Conrail has been
written in a way that will prevent nearly any other offer from being heard.
And still others believe this bidding war will reach a stalemate, and the
two aggressors will eventually get together and divy up the spoils of Conrail
between them. LEN BESTHOFF NEWS-7.))
