((Ever since TWA Flight 800 crashed off the coast of Long Island, New York, killing all 230 on board the world has wondered who or what is to blame. was it a bomb? Mechanical failure or something horrifyingly closer to home?
PIERRE SALINGER/Former ABC Correspondent: IT SAYS HERE THAT TWA FLIGHT 800 WAS SHOT DOWN BY US NAVY GUIDED MISSILES. Former ABC Newsman Pierre Salinger has caused quite a stir after announcing that a U.S. Secret Service agent passed along a document that proves what has been rumored since the July 17th crash: That flight 800 was downed by friendly fire. But angry federal officials don't give any credence to Salinger's story:

SOT: JAMES KALLSTROM, ASSISTANT FBI DIRECTOR:

WE WANT TO ASSURE THE AMERIGAN PUBLIC. WE WANT TO ASSURE THE VICTIM'S FAMILIES THAT NOTHING, NOTHING LIKE THAT HAS TAKEN PLACE, WOULD TAKE PLACE, WOULD EVER TAKE PLACE.
Salinger says that for five weeks now he's had proof that the navy was practicing manouvers the night of july 17 in an area known in the military as "W-105" to the south east of Long Island. He says a guided missile was fired accidentally from there. Why has he not come forward with this information before?
PIERRE SALINGER: I GOT THAT PAPER AND AT THAT TIME I THOUGHT LET'S SIT BACK AND SEE WHAT THIS INVESTIGATION WILL DO.
The FBI says Pierre Salinger will be contacted but calls his allegations "utter nonsense." But after nearly four months, the FBI admits it still no a way to go before determining what brought down TWA Flight 800. Liz Mullen, CBS News, New York.))
