Liberty University dodges a bullet-- for now-- as it comes up with a million
dollar payment avoiding foreclosure.
You're watching NEWS-7 Primetime on WEFC, I'm Connie Stevens.
Liberty University owes about 15-million dollars to investors who bought
bonds the school issued in the 1980's.
The cash-strapped university had offered to make a lump sum payment of half
Liberty says it withheld interest payments while it waited to hear whether
that deal would be accepted.
But the committees that control the account reportedly never informed the
bondholders of the offer.
Over the weekend, those same committees threatened to foreclose on the
school unless the interest payments were made.
Liberty says it gave in by paying the million dollars to the quote--
"reckless and unreasonable demands" of the bondholders' committee.
In the wake of a controversial evaluation on his first year in office,
Radford University president Douglas Covington is getting a pay raise.
The board of visitors approved a two-point-five percent performance raise
And it passed a resolution pledging to work candidly and harmoniously with
the president, and to develop an employment contract.

Covington and the board are keeping quiet about details of the evaluation,
which a citizens group charged was racially- motivated.
Covington is the first African-American university president in Virginia,
and the evaluation was the first of ANY president at Radford.
At Virginia Tech, the board of Visitors stood behind the University's
actions for how it handled nine indicted football players.
The board did not discuss the matter in open session, but while in executive
session, President Torgersen briefed them on the situation.

The players were indicted by a Montgomery County grand jury last week.

Not far from Mexico City, a fire fighter may be dead after a gasoline
storage tank exploded today-- and a second caught fire.
At least eleven other people were hurt.
It was November 19th, 1984, that a series of explosions in underground gas
pipelines in that area killed more than 500 people.

Outside of Los Angeles, another explosion today rocked a Texaco refinery--
sending flames 100 feet in the air.
A plume of black smoke rose thousands of feet and could be seen for miles.
More than 110 firefighters were sent to battle the blaze, no word yet on
what caused the blast and resulting fire.
Meantime, a boycott against Texaco is being threatened by the Reverend
He says the corporation must come up with a plan to hire more women and
The threat comes after reports that a Texaco executive used racial slurs
when referring to minorities.

Roanoke police are on the lookout tonight for an alleged carjacker.
48-year old John Alexander Carter told police he was driving along Center
Avenue, Northwest-- when a man gestured for him to pull over.
Another man wearing a white stocking cap opened the passenger door of
Authorities say the man brandished a semi-automatic handgun and demanded
When they didn't find any cash in Carter's wallet, the suspect fired shots
through the truck's window.
Carter jumped out of his 1997 Dodge Ram pickup.
Police found the truck in northwest Roanoke, but say the suspect is still
The number of robberies in cars has increased dramatically this year in

Ninth district delegate Allen Dudley has made it official-- saying he
wants to take
Virgil Goode's senate seat in Richmond.
If Dudley's elected it would bring a Republican majority in the senate for
the first time.
This morning at a rally, the Rocky Mount Republican announced he will run
for the seat left by Virgil Goode.

The Virginia Tech Hokies got a look at some outside competition tonight as
they hosted the Yugoslavian National game in a preseason exhibition at the
