Liberty University has staved off a major financial crisis.
Officials made a one million dollar interest payment to creditors yesterday.

VO-NAT
SUPER=03-Lynchburg;

The cash-strapped university owes about 15-million dollars to investors who bought bonds the school issued in the 19-80's.
Liberty says it withheld interest payments while waiting to hear if another deal to pay a lump sum total of half the debt would be accepted.
But the committees that control the account reportedly never informed the bondholders of the offer.
Over the weekend, those same committees threatened to foreclose on the school unless the interest payments were made.

Creditors had threatened to foreclose on it unless that payment was made.
Liberty owes about fifteen million dollars on a bond issue the school made in the 19-80's.
It had offered to pay bondholders about half that amount in one lump sum.
Liberty says it stopped making interest payments while it waited to see if that offer would be accepted.
But the committee handling the account reportedly never informed bondholders of the offer.
Instead, that same committee threatened to foreclose on the school's property unless the interest payments were made.
Liberty says it paid the money to avoid putting the school and its students in jeopardy.
