national magazine-- in an article on hazing.

Hazing has been outlawed on many college campuses. Often, though it goes
But at Washington and Lee University they know they have some work to do,
as some disturbing pictures of hazing at the Lexington college were published
in the New York Times Magazine.

School officials began working on a new policy late last year. It targets
individual frat members involved in hazing, and puts their academic futures on
the line. The minimun penalty, immediate suspension.

"breaking the cycle". In otherwords, if you were a pledge and you had to go
through the same sort of hazing ritual, it's hard for you to let new pledges in

Autopsy results reveal 29-year-old Dorothy Gilliam died from a single
gunshot wound to the head.
Her body was found in a burning van yesterday in Lynchburg.
The medical examiner says 34-year-old Dennis Oxford, also in the van died of
A note found near the vehicle said Oxford blamed Gilliam for a health
The medical examiner refused to comment on the problem, or if there was one.

A police officer was shot in the leg, and dozens of gunshots were fired--
it all happened in the same neighborhood where rioting broke out last month.
Tonight's shooting happened hours after a grand jury ruled that another
police officer was justified in last month's shooting of a black motorist that
sparked the rioting.

A seven-hour hostage standoff finally ended peacefully in Columbus, Ohio
A 40-year-old unemployed gunman is said to have been despondent over a
rejected workers' compensation claim.
He took over the Workers' Comp Office on the 12th floor of the state
The last of three hostages overpowered the gunman-- he'll be charged with
three counts of kidnapping.
The desperate refugee situation in Zaire will soon be getting some
reluctant help from the U.S. in the form of troops.

The United States has agreed in principal to join a risky mission to get
food and supplies to starving Rwandan refugees in Zaire.
In Goma, refugees were trampled when a desperate crowd stampeded during the
first distribution of food since the start of the current crisis.
The President has now agreed in principal to join a canadian-led relief
team bound for Goma.. where civilians have been trapped for two weeks after
rebels took hold of the borders.
Despite urgency stressed by the United Nations, White House officials
remember Somalia.. and say the President is cautious about this mission.

THE WHITE HOUSE WANTS TO AVOID THE PITFALLS OF THE PAST.
PRESIDENT CLINTON HAS MADE THIS A CONDITIONAL RELIEF MISSION: GROUND TROOPS
WILL STAY IN THE AREA FOR NO LONGER THAN FOUR MONTHS. SOLDIERS WILL SHOW
DISCRETION IN SELF-DEFENSE, THERE WILL BE NO DISARMING OF REBELS, AND THE U-S
WILL SPLIT THE COST OF THIS TRIP WITH OTHER PARTICIPATING NATIONS.
President Clinton has made this a conditional relief mission, ground troops
will stay in the area for no longer than four months. Soldiers will show
discretion in self defense. There will be no disarming of rebels. And the U.S.
will split the cost of this trip with other participating nations.
Heavy fighting in this ethnic and political battle that's lasted two years
has forced over one million refugees to scatter.
The fear now is that many are crossing over into neighboring countries..
too scared to return home to Zaire and Rwanda.

The election is not over in California, where ballots are still being
counted in the race for a seat in Congress--
But first jurors didn't waste any time reaching a verdict in the case of
James Henry Burley--the Amherst County man on trial for murder.

It took LESS than half an hour for an Amherst County jury to convict James
Henry Burley of first degree murder.
There was only circumstantial evidence but apparently it was enough to
convince the jurors that the 45 year old killed Robin Burge.
Her body was found almost a year ago along the James River with six
The murder weapon was discovered in Burley's home.
Evidence shows Burge was killed over sex and drugs.

The jury recommended a life sentence plus eight years for a weapons
Burley is still waiting to be tried for the murder of another woman who
was found dead in a similar case.
The government wants a detailed "blueprint" for co-education from Virginia
It's the latest round in the battle of the sexes at V-M-I as the two sides
go back to court.
This time the subject was not whether to admit women, but how.
V-M-I wants to be able to submit progress reports to Judge Jackson Kiser
without government supervision.

Even though election day was more than a week ago, the votes are still being
counted in Orange County, California.
Veteran Republican Congressman Bob Dornan refuses to concede his seat to
Democrat Loretta Sanchez.
She currently leads by 929 votes--officials still have to count a thousand
absentee ballots and thousands of provisional ballots.
Those are granted to voters who don't verify their address or other required
Dornan says he suspects fraud, by people voting who aren't citizens.
He ran unsuccessfully for the Republican presidential nomination this year.
Virginia Attorney General Jim Gilmore is following the lead

of North Carolina and Kentucky in opposing FDA regulation of tobacco.
Gilmore's filed a "friend of the court" brief challenging the FDA's

An estimated 70-thousand troops complained of symptoms ranging from
forgetfulness to cancer, that they believe is linked to service in the Gulf.
Martinsville is moving along in its plan to build a new jail.
City council just approved a temporary facility to be used until the new
permanent jail is complete.
That won't come soon enough for Martinsville Sheriff Steve Draper.
Draper says the current jail was built to house 18 inmates-- its population
has risen as high as 63.
