It's being called an "historic landmark" in the struggle for equal rights in
the workplace, as Texaco settles a billion dollar racial discrimination

Texaco agreed to a 176 Million dollar settlement-- it will be shared by
some 14-hundred black employees.
As Lee Cowan reports, the message seems to be-- there's no place in
business for bigotry.

With a boycott of its service stations looming, Texaco has settled a race
discrimination suit that's expected to cost the giant oil company more than a
hundred million dollars.

AGREEMENT. IT MOVES THIS MATTER FROM THE REALM OF ADVERSERIAL CONFRONTATION IN

Plaintiffs sought more than half a billion dollars in damages.
they alleged they had been held back at Texaco by a "good old boy" network
that favored white employees.

HOSTILITY, WORKERS WHO WERE CALLED JELLY BEANS AND THE LIKE AND WERE TREATED
EVEN WORSE DESERVE MUCH CONGRATULATIONS.
The pressure on texaco to settle increased dramatically after tape
recordings of a company mgeting _ere mcde public.
In the tapes, managers talked about minority employees in disparaging
terms and of destroying company documents in the case.
The tapes rocked texaco.
the company suspended two executives, the oil company's chairman apologized
and the Reverend Jesse Jackson called for a nationwide boycott.
Still with friday's settlement, the company's troubles are far from over.
A federal grand jury continues to investigate whether company documents

holidays- Bosnia and Zaire.
President Clinton says the exodus of Rwandan refugees back to Rwanda is
good news-- but it's too soon to scrap plans for international humanitarian

Perry likens the situation in Bosnia to a patient who survives an

Residents of Garden City who were flooded out of their homes last year are
getting some help.
Today, the Federal Emergency Management Agency announced a grant of almost
two million dollars to purchase flood- prone homes and businesses there.
The Roanoke neighborhood has been hit with high water repeatedly.
The federal money, along with state and local funds will be used to
purchase 42 structures.
The buyouts are voluntary.

state's bi-partisan welfare reform law.
Among the statistics, four-thousand welfare recipients are now working for

Social Services Commissioner Clarence Carter promised to keep "tweaking the
Health officials are still investigating the cause of a gasoline leak in

A Lynchburg restaurant is shut down after reports of salmonella
He wasn't on the ballot- but Oliver North is still a part of Virginia

Public health officials in Lynchburg have traced an outbreak of salmonella
poisoning back to a Hill City restaurant.
Eleven people have tested positive for the salmonella bacteria, and
apparently one remains hospitalized from complications.
Authorities traced the source back to Jumbo's Family Restaurant on Route 460
It's believed the ingredients in a shipment of macaroni and cheese COULD be
Jumbo's owners voluntarily closed the restaurant last week and hope to
re-open sometime next week.
This is the first widespread outbreak of salmonella poisoning in the
Lynchburg area in more than a year.
Salmonella causes nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, fever and
headaches-- with the symptoms most severe in infants and the elderly, and those
with compromised immune systems.
For most people, though, salmonella is a short-lived gastro-intestinal
All is forgiven between Virginia Republicans Oliver North
and John Warner -- at least on the surface.

If you are stuck with a Holdren's service warranty, you're not completely

Virginia's Office of Consumer Affairs says it's stepping up its efforts to
help consumers with service contracts that are not being honored.
The trouble began last summer when Crenshaw T-V and Appliance Company
acquired the assets of Holdren's, but NOT its liabilities.
The state says 860 people have sent in complaints on the matter.
The Office of Consumer Affairs estimates the value of the outstanding
service contracts at ONE- POINT- SEVEN- MILLON- DOLLARS.
Crenshaw is offering discounts to the contract holders, but not the original
deal they had with Holdren's.

A high school senior from Monterey officially applied today as one of the
first women in the class of 2001 at Virginia Military Institute.
Jennifer Jolin hasn't decided for sure that she wants to go to V-M-I.
She DOES know she wants to be a doctor.
The 17-year old Highland High-School senior says she's also considering
James Madison and the University of Virginia.

A portion of the Lewis- Gale Clinic in Salem has been acquired by a
Tennessee health firm.
Phycor (FI--CORE) of Nashville announced that it has acquired certain assets
of the Lewis- Gale Clinic for an undisclosed price.
Phycor has also entered into a long term service agreement with the medical

It currently operates 44 clinics in 25 states.

Rumors are circulating throughout college football that Notre Dame Head
coach Lou Holtz is retiring and it could happen next week. And the Virginia

Tonight Notre Dame head coach Lou Holtz ended the rumors that he was
retiring as head coach of the Irish.
C-B-S and E-S-P-N were saying that Holtz will step down as the Irish head
coach before the season is over.
The announcement was to come as early as tomorrow after Saturday's game
Or Tuesday or Wednesday after Holtz informed his players and assistant
coaches of the decision.
But tonight, Holtz says its not true.
