The pressure on texaco to settle increased dramatically after tape recordings of a company mgeting _ere mcde public.
In the tapes, managers talked about minority employees in disparaging terms and of destroying company documents in the case.

The tapes rocked texaco. the company suspended two executives, the oil company's chairman apologized and the Reverend Jesse Jackson called for a nationwide boycott.
Still with friday's settlement, the company's troubles are far from over.
A federal grand jury continues to investigate whether company documents were destroyed.

Today, the Federal Emergency Management Agency announced a grant of almost two million dollars to purchase flood- prone homes and businesses there.
The Roanoke neighborhood has been hit with high water repeatedly.
The federal money, along with state and local funds will be used to purchase 42 structures.
The buyouts are voluntary.

Public health officials in Lynchburg have traced an outbreak of salmonella poisoning back to a Hill City restaurant.

Eleven people have tested positive for the salmonella bacteria, and apparently one remains hospitalized from complications.
Authorities traced the source back to Jumbo's Family Restaurant on Route 460 east.
It's believed the ingredients in a shipment of macaroni and cheese COULD be to blame.
Jumbo's owners voluntarily closed the restaurant last week and hope to re-open sometime next week.
This is the first widespread outbreak of salmonella poisoning in the Lynchburg area in more than a year.
