There was no chance for the people on board.
And what the week of hearings will show is just how desperate it was inside the cockpit last may on valujet flight 592. Transportation officials are suing right up front: They're not here to draw conclusions. Those will come in a report next spring.
A report just released describes in detail what led up to the crash, including what happened in the cockpit. First, some unidentifiable sounds.
Then the pilot wonders, "What was that"?
The co-pilot responds, "I don't know."
Pilot: "We got some electrical problem."
Co-pilot: "yeah."
Pilot: "We're losing everything. we need to go back to Miami."
Then there are sounds of passengers shouting, a woman yells, "fire, fire, fire, fire."
Then a man shouts, "we're on fire, we're on fire." The fire probably came from oxygen canisters, mistakenly loaded on the plane. STEVEN TOWNES, SABRETECH PRESIDENT, "I WAS CANDID THEN AND I WON'T MINCE WORDS NOW.
Steven Townes was on the hot seat when he spoke to congress, and again now.
Workers at his firm loaded oxygen canisters onto the plane, canisters which may have sparked the fire. TOWNES: NOT ONE OF THOSE OXYGEN CANISTERS WAS LABELED CLEARLY AS A HAZARDOUS MATERIAL THAT CAME OUT OF THOSE AGED AIRPLANES.
They were marked, with a tag that indicated they were items simply on their way to be repaired. TOWNES: THAT SHIPPING CLERK, OUR LOGISTICS STOCK ROOM PERSON, MADE THE ERROR OF ASSUMING THAT MEANT EMPTY.
But some were full, probably fueling the fire that brought down the plane, killing all 110 people on it, including Susan Smith's son. SUSAN SMITH, VICTIM'S MOTHER: I DON'T BLAME ANYONE, I JUST WISH THE FAA WOULD HAVE IMPLEMENTED THE SUGGESTIONS THAT THE NTSB GAVE THEM BACK IN 1993.
The suggestion was that the FAA require fire safety equipment in the cargo hold of all older planes.
Now it appears that's gong to happen as well as something else: lawsuits. There were nearly as many lawyers as victims at day one of the hearings.
