DARE- OFFICER STANELY: CAN YOU THINK OF ANY EXAMPLE OF DRUGS ABUSE CAUSING

ANDREA TAYLOR/12 Years old: I'VE LEARNED IT'S OKAY IF YOU DON'T WANT TO DO

Young people can recite the DARE doctrine by heart.

But along the way, something-- or someone convinces them otherwise.
TODD BRYANT:
THE PRESSURES ARE REALLY, REALLY GREAT, THEY'RE VERY HIGH AND THERE'S JUST A
WHOLE LOT OF PEOPLE DOING A WHOLE LOT OF STUFF THAT THEY PROBABLY SHOULDN'T BE
DOING IT'S JUST UNBELIEVABLE.
DAVID HOOKER: I TRY TO IGNORE THEM BUT IT IS HARD, I MEAN I CAN'T SAY I'VE
NEVER DONE IT, I'M NOT GOING TO SAY I HAVE DONE IT BUT IT'S NOT EASY IGNORE.
Peer pressure is part of the problem, finding other causes may mean going
back nearly thirties years.
Experts say baby boomer parents may have a more relaxed attitude toward drugs
because they experimented with them in the 60's, and view it as a phase.
JOANN BURKHOLDER/STUDENT COUNSELOR:
BUT WHAT WE KNOW FOR ONE THING THAT'S NOT TRUE, THAT THE QUALITY OF SUBSTANCES
BEING USE NOW IS MUCH HIGHER THEN IT WAS BACK WHEN THE BABY BOOMERS WERE IN
COLLEGE, WE ALSO KNOW THAT STUDENTS ARE BEGINNING TO USE AT AN EARLIER AGE.
Some teens like Jodi Widener, who is a drug user in recovery, tell about an
