Last night a Philadelphia judge denied the railroad's request to delay a merger between its rival C-S-X and Conrail...a carrier that dominates the Northeast.
Today, NS's motion to immediately halt the deal was brought to an appeals court and it was ALSO denied.

It now appears 29 people are dead-- and scores of people injured in Hong Kong, after a fire broke out in a business district.
It started on the lower floors of the 16-story commercial building, but spread quickly through the lift shafts, to the top of the building.
Several people were trapped in stairways, and on the top floor-- Others jumped-- and some were lifted to safety by helicopter.
150 firefighters have been battling the blaze for hours-- it is still burning.
The building apparently does not meet modern fire protection standards.

Investigators removed the 14 charred bodies of the victims this afternoon and began their probe into why the two planes collided.
Witnesses say visibility was good last night as the United Express commuter plane touched down at Baldwin Municipal Airport near Quincy.
As the plane slowed, a second private plane was building speed for takeoff ...on a collision course. GEORGE BLACK, NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION SAFETY BOARD: WAS VICIOUS FIRE, THAT ERUPTED AFTER THE COLLISION OF THE TWO AIRLINERS.
Witnesses wonder why the pilot of the small private plane failed to see the landing aircraft and avert the crash.
A private pilot driving to the airport said the landing lights of the United Express plane were clearly visible. MIKE COULTAS/WITNESS...CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHY DIDN'T STOP, CAUSE I HAD THE SAME VIEW.
There is no control tower at the small regional airport in West-Central Illinois, but pilots broadcast their position repeatedly on an open radio frequency as they take off and land. Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board have the task of sorting through what's left of the two aircraft: a couple engines, the tail of the commuter plane and assorted debris.
The commuter craft did have a cockpit voice recorder which could yield clues.

A hunter made a gruesome discovery this afternoon in Pittsylvania County.

The skeletal remains of what appears to be a human were found around 4- o'clock at the Pittsylvania County Wildlife Hunt Club, near Chatham.
Sheriff's officials believe the body had been there for quite sometime.
The remains will be sent to a state medical examiner to help determine the identity and cause of death.
Authorities say they don't know of anyone reported missing over the past year.

Friends say Bill Vernon was a "walking encyclopedia" who dedicated his life to bluegrass music.
He died early this morning at his home in Franklin County following an apparent asthma attack.
Vernon hosted bluegrass shows on several local stations, including a weekly shift on public radio for more than a decade.
But he was also known outside of western Virginia as a record collector, an emcee, and an author of album liner notes.
