Flames shot from windows and smoke filled the interior hallways.
Some people jumped from windows to escape-

One of the dead was a firefighter.
Eight others are still missing.

17-year old Lewis "Trey" Mize pled not guilty by reason of insanity to the murder charge today in Campbell County.
Mize told police he shot his neighbor, Roger Vassar Junior, last January because he saw a similar crime on T-V.
Psychiatrists are expected to give different opinions as to whether Mize was insane the night of the murder.

He says he tried to reach Simpson by intercom but did not get a response.
Also today, an FBI agent testified a picture of Simpson shows him wearing the same kind of shoes worn by the killer.
Simpson denied ever owning such shoes.
But the agent said it was Italian Bruni Magli's in Simpson's size that left the bloody prints near the bodies.

In the War on Drugs, knowledge is strength.
Parents are finding that when they know what their kids are up against, its easier to communicate with them. The next step is spotting the warning signs. A study out today says estrogen treatment can dramatically sharpen memory and concentration in women with Alzheimers Disease.
And one local group wants people to know that even though the disease is incurable, there are steps you can take to slow it down.

If you're a woman who's had a hysterectomy for something other than cancer- you may not need regular pap smears.
A new study suggests you can skip the test.
Pap smears are used to check for signs of cancer- mainly in the cervix.
But in hysterectomies the uterus and cervix are removed.
The study is in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Alleghany County Supervisors will try to rebuild a regional jail agreement next week.

The jail in Covington is deteriorating fast, but Covington, Clifton Forge, and Bath county have either rejected or rescinded the current regional jail proposal.
Last night the Alleghany County board proposed a joint meeting next Tuesday night, to try and rework the plan.
At least three localities have to sign a regional agreement to qualify for state funding.

Bill Vernon was a local radio announcer, but his reputation as an authority on bluegrass music extended far beyond western Virginia.
Vernon died early this morning at his home in Franklin County after an apparent asthma attack.
Raised in New York, Vernon came to the area in the early '70s.
He hosted bluegrass shows on several local stations, including a weekly shift on public radio for more than a decade.
Vernon also collected vintage recordings, em-ceed bluegrass events and wrote album liner notes for many leading musicians.

Hampden-Sydney's Joe Bush announced his resignation as the school's head football coach yesterday after 11 seasons at the helm.
His teams won 61 games over that time, and the ODAC championship in 1987.

The Ferrum College hall of famer replaced Horace Green in Mid-October and led the Eagles to a big upset of Patrick Henry.
Next year he will have over 30 junior off this year's team returning to form what should be a solid nucleus for the program.
