Jodi Widener is just 17 years old and fighting a drug addiction.
Jodi says she easily kept it secret from from her family with lies and manipulation.

School counselors say teenagers also hide their drug use with acting.
JOANN BURKHOLDER: THEY LEARN HOW NOT TO ACT HIGH AND AFTER YOU ARE PRACTICED FOR A WHILE A LOT OF TIME YOU DON'T KNOW WHEN A KID IS HIGH AND NOT BECAUSE THEY 'VE BEEN DOING IT LONG THEY'RE JUST REALLY GOOD AT IT.
BELIEVE ME IF YOU THINK YOU KNOW YOUR CHILD, YOUR CHILD KNOWS YOU VERY WELL AND THEY KNOW EXACTLY HOW TO PLAY YOU.
On this night its the parents who are in the classroom-- they're taking an 8 week course called Parent to Parent. LISA CHILDRESS: RIGHT NOW WE HAVE SO MANY KIDS DOING DRUGS THAT IF YOU CHOOSE NOT TO DO DRUGS YOU DON'T HAVE A WHOLE LOT OF CHOICES OF WHO YOU'RE GOING TO HANG OUT WITH.
The program is both intervention and prevention.

In the War on Drugs, knowledge is strength.
Parents are finding that when they know what their kids are up against, its easier to communicate with them. The next step is spotting the warning signs. OFFICER TOM KINCAID/ROANOKE COUNTY POLICE DEPT.: ONE THING THEY NEED TO LOOK FOR IS A SIGNIFICANT CHANGE IN BEHAVIOR FROM WHAT THEIR TEEN HAD BEEN DOING, IF THEY HAVE BIG MOOD SWINGS. IF THEY APPEAR TO BE HANGING OUT WITH DIFFERENT PEOPLE THEY MIGHT WANT TO WATCH OUT FOR THE OTHER WARNING SIGNS.
They include any type of Drug paraphernalia, like pipes, rolling paper or scales.
Strange odors.
Empty aerosol cans, which are signs off huffing or inhaling.
Dropping grades in school.
The disappearance of money.
Also changes in appearance, sleeping habits and even appetite. MARGIE TWIGG/ADOLESCENT COUNSELOR: I DON'T THINK ONE SIGN IS GOING TO TELL YOU THAT YOUR CHILD IS INVOLVED IN DRUGS OR ALCOHOL, IT'S A TOTAL PICTURE.
If some of the signs are there the next step is to seek help from the professionals.
That may have been difference between life and death for Jodi.
