I WAS LIKE A GARBAGE DISPOSAL, JUST KEEP GIVING IT TO ME AND I DIDN'T CARE WHAT IT WAS AS LONG AS I GOT HIGH.
Seventeen-year-old Marcie Archuleta is a former substance abuser who has been clean from drugs and alcohol for two years.
She started using in junior high. MARCIE: MY LIFE WAS JUST A ROLLERCOASTER GOING STRAIGHT DOWN HILL AT FULL SPEED.
September 26th, 1994 was the last time Marcie got high,
Marcie is now in college, after graduating from High School a year early, and is hoping her story will keep other teens from using. MARCIE: I DIDN'T HAVE ANY SELF ESTEEM, NO SELF WORTH, I LET PEOPLE WALK ALL OVER ME, I LET PEOPLE USE MY MIND MY BODY, AND I USED OTHER PEOPLE AS WELL.
Marcie's classroom lectures are just one element of Roanoke County's Student Assistance Program.
The program aims not only to prevent and identify drug use, but offers referral services and support groups. JOANN BURKHOLDER: THEY'RE NOT THERAPY GROUPS BY ANY MEANS BUT THEIR SUPPORT GROUPS IN HELPING STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT THE DISEASE OF CHEMICAL DEPENDENCY, LEARNING REFUSAL SKILLS.
WE'RE UP CLOSE AND PERSON AND IT'S STILL HARD FOR US TO ACCEPT TO BELIEVE WHAT'S HAPPENING IS REALLY HAPPENING.
SAP also uses a CORE team of educators who are able to network with other teachers and even students to identify possible users. ANN WHITE: I HAVE STUDENTS STAY AFTER CLASS AN SAY MISS WHITE I'M REALLY WORRIED ABOUT, DID YOU NOTICE AND THEY KNOW THAT WE'RE THERE AND WE CARE AND WE CAN TRY TO HELP.
Core also serves to educate parents, because statistics show that not only are fewer parents talking to their children about drugs, but most of the drug use occurs when PARENTS are in charge.
In fact teens who were surveyed said a school building is the last place they use drugs.
SUE BREWER: WE CAN'T SAY THAT WE HAVE NONE HERE BUT I THINK THE MAJORITY TAKES PLACE, DURING ALL THESE HOURS AFTER SCHOOL.
That's why SAP seeks to become an ally with parents in the war on drugs.
Because as Marcie tells it there are only two options for today's teens. MARCIE4: I CAN NOT USE, I CAN TRY AND LIVE MY LIFE OR I CAN USE AND I CAN DIE, LIFE OR DEATH, LIFE OR DEATH, 2 CHOICES, CHOOSE LIFE, BEFORE I CHOSE DEATH.
