Bill Vernon was a local radio announcer, but his reputation as an authority
on bluegrass music extended far beyond western Virginia.
Vernon died early yesterday morning at his home in Franklin County after an
apparent asthma attack.
Raised in New York, Vernon came to the area in the early '70s.
He hosted bluegrass shows on several local stations, including a weekly
shift on public radio for more than a decade.
Vernon also collected vintage recordings, em-ceed bluegrass events and
wrote album liner notes for many leading musicians.
Bill Vernon was 59- years- old.

Anne Vaden was bound, stabbed, strangled and beaten.
Lawyers for Bennett met yesterday with Governor Allen's chief counsel to
argue Bennett's request for clemency.
They contend that Bennett's former wife who testified against him lied.
In a similar claim earlier this month, Allen commuted a death sentence to
life without parole for another inmate, Joseph Payne.
