RUNS=:11
OUT Q=ANYTHING ANY BETTER
Response time is an issue because it can mean the difference between life
and death.
For example "The Annuals of Emergency Medicine" reports a 10 minute response
time by a rescue squad equipped with advanced life support results in a zero
percent survival rate for heart attack victims.
The survival rate is seven percent if the same squad responds in four
minutes.
When more advanced emergency treatment is provided quickly the survival rate
jumps to 28 percent.
Also when Roanoke county officials say it took nine minutes for units to
respond, it doesn't necessarily mean they reached the scene nine minutes after
the call to 9-1-1.
The response time starts after rescue workers mark the truck en-route and
ends when they reach the incident.
If no one is staffing the fire stations, the reaction time increases.
Roanoke county officials say they are studying the possibility of
establishing a uniform response time goal.
