Lynchburg authorities are investigating the unexplained death of a city man
whose wife remains hospitalized in stable condition tonight.
Police responded to 728 Chickasaw Road around 8 this morning after a
neighbor called 9-1-1.
The neighbor had come to check on the elderly couple and found a note on the
door that said "help".
After entering the house, he found 87- year- old Edward Wright dead in his
Wright's 86- year- old wife Maureen was lying in the den, but still
Rescue workers transported her to Lynchburg General Hospital.

Burnette says an autopsy on Edward Wright will be performed Monday, but it
could take several weeks before the results of toxicology tests are available.
He would not comment on a possible cause of death.
A teenager has been charged with attempted murder on a Roanoke police
Police say the incident started this morning when a 15- year- old male tried
to elude an officer.
The teen ended up wreaking at 5th Street and Madison Avenue.
A second officer then arrived on the scene.
He went up to the driver's side window and the youth attempted to back over
The officer was able to get away from the car without being injured.
The youth then drove off and wreaked at 8th Street.
He was later caught after a foot pursuit.
Police have not released the name of the officer.
More than 100 people are dead, after a hijacked Ethiopian plane crashed into

The plane crashed about 60 miles west of Cape Mendocino.
Search crews have found two bodies.
Rescuers say the one surviving crew member had managed to get into a
cold-water survival suit, but it had ripped and filled with water.

Mother Theresa is getting better.
The 86 year old Nobel Prize winner was taken to the hospital with heart
The medical director says the crisis is over, and Mother Theresa is asking
to go home.
Last August she was rushed to the hospital, suffering from an irregular
heartbeat, malaria, and pneumonia.
Doctors say her condition is nat that serious this time.
A new Miss World was crowned in India today, as police fought rioting
The protestors called the event an exersise in vulgarity, saying it violated
Ten-thousand police and soldiers were deployed to control the crowd....they
had to use tear gas and rubber bullett.
At least seven policemen were hurt in the confrontation.
It was India's first international beauty contest.
Irene Soliva of Greece was crowned the new Miss World.

Fire and Rescue departments have historically been volunteer organizations.
But as the times change, so do the demands on these departments.
Many localities across the country are debating the issue of whether to use
volunteers or career personnel.
In the second part of her weekend series Denise Allen takes us to Fairfax
County, where this issue is being debated.

((There are more than 32-thousand fire departments in the United States and
75-percent of those are ALL volunteer.
Fairfax County started out as a volunteer organization but as the county's
population grew so did the department's need for a paid staff.
But now the county government is cutting the fire department's overtime
budget by more than 700-thousand dollars for 1997.

GAINES SAYS HIS VOLUNTEERS ARE HELD TO A HIGH STANDARD TO ENSURE THE SAFETY
OF THE FIRE FIGHTERS AND THE PUBLIC.

And Fairfax County residents have come to expect a high level of service.
The county has 34 fire stations which serve 399 square miles and a
population of almost 900-thousand people.
Gaines says these residents pay the lowest fire insurance rate in the state
because of his department's quick response to calls.

State president Mike Mohler says volunteers just don't have the time to keep
up with the necessary training.

Students just seem to be drawn to Roanoke City's Magnet Schools.
The city started the program about 10 years ago as a way to promote
voluntary desegregation and keep students interested in school.
Hershberger Road was closed at four this morning so a plane could be moved
to William Fleming High School for the eighth annual Magnet fair.
This fair is one way the school system attracts students to their programs.
Magnet Schools are open to students from all area school systems and there
is no tuition.
The program matches its curriculum with the students' interests.

Roanoke City has received about 20-million dollars in federal funding during
the past 10 years for the Magnet School program.
Each individual school will host an open house during the first two weeks in

Jefferson Forest had hoped to avenge an earlier loss to Brookville today in
the Region 3 championship game, but the Bees buzzed into next week's state
semis with a 25 to 8 win.
