Lynchburg authorities are investigating the unexplained death of a city man
whose wife remains hospitalized tonight.

Police responded to 728 Chickasaw Road around 8 this morning after a
neighbor called 9-1-1.
The neighbor had come to check on the elderly couple and found a note on the
door that said "help".
After entering the house, he found 87- year- old Edward Wright dead in his
bedroom.
Wright's 86- year- old wife Maureen was lying in the den, but still
breathing.
Rescue workers transported her to Lynchburg General Hospital.

An Ethiopian jetliner was hijacked, and then crashed today, killing at least
50 people.

Relatives waited anxiously for information about survivors at the airport in
Kenya.
The plane reportedly crashed into the sea off the Coromo Islands after
running out of fuel.
45 people survived the crash, including the pilot and a crew members.
An air traffic controller says the the hijackers were from India, trying to
go to Australia... there's no word on what happened to them.

The Air Force Reserve says only one person has been found alive.
He was pulled from the ocean last night.
The crew reported electrical difficulties, shutting down one of four of the
plane's engines.
Officials say the plane was on a training mission from North Island
Naval Air Station near San Diego to its home base in Portland, Oregon.

An Amtrak train jumped the tracks while traveling from Washington DC to
Boston this morning.

At least 30 people were hurt when the train derailed in Northern New Jersey.
The train was going about 60 miles an hour when both locomotives and several
cars ran down an embankment, ending up in the mud.
It also sideswiped another Amtrak train, traveling to Charlotte... no one on
that train was hurt.
Because of the wreck, all Amtrak service between Washington and New York was
cancelled today.

Police say a teenager from Riner was traveling 50 miles over the speed limit
when he wrecked his car in Christiansburg last night.
The 17- year- old driver was apparently going 75 in a 25 mile- per- hour-
zone on Clearview Drive.

He finally wrecked at the intersection of Wimmer Street.
It happened around 11:30.
The driver was taken to Montgomery Regional Hospital where he was treated
and released.
Life Guard 10 transported the passenger, 18- year- old Wesley Jones of
Christiansburg to Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
He remains in critical condition.
