14 million dollars is on the line.
That's what Virginia will lose over the next two years if state officials continue to snub the federal Goals Two-Thousand program.
That according to new figures from the U-S Department of Education.
The state already has turned down 8-point-4 million dollars for the first two years of the education program.
Virginia is the only state that has refused to accept money from the program.
SS=Allen, George

Governor Allen says the money would lead to federal intrusion into state education policies.
Meanwhile new estimates show Virginia will not have to borrow any more money to build prisons.
(----------------)
VO-NAT
SUPER=@File;

That's because of falling estimates for the number of inmates behind bars by the year 2000.
Two years ago planners thought Virginia would have more than 40-thousand-900 prison inmates by the turn of the century.
The latest estimate is 36-thousand-310 inmates.
The forecasts can trigger the need for millions of tax dollars for prison construction -- or free up money for other services.
