Another strike for convicted killer Jens Soering-- who maintains he did NOT
murder Derrick and Nancy Haysom.
This is news-7 Primetime on WEFC, I'm Connie Stevens.
The state lab says there's no sign of blood on the knife Soering's lawyer
thought might exonerate him.
Soering is due back in court in Bedford next month for a hearing on whether
he deserves a new trial.
His lawyer will argue that a couple of hitchhikers who killed a Roanoke man
around the same time could have murdered Derek and Nancy Haysom, rather than
the German honors student from U-V-a.
An appeals court sent the case back to the trial judge to decide whether to
try it again.
Michael Obremski was an honors student, an Eagle Scout and went to college
on a U-S Navy scholarship.
But now he faces 62 years in prison for making obscene phone calls to young
The 39-year old cook says he was just talking to them, when he made the
calls from the pay phone outside his motel room.
A police detective let us hear an example of Obremski's calls.

The prosecutor says that was nothing compared to the graphic language

Today in Roanoke, Obremski got an additional 31-years added on to his

Home video released today shows the fatal crash of an Ethiopian airliner
over the weekend.
These pictures were taken by someone on the beach.
The jetliner plunged into the water--breaking into pieces, after it ran out
of fuel off the Comoros Islands.
Hijackers demanded they be taken to Australia but refused to let the pilots
stop to refuel.
127 people died in the crash- 52 survived- some swimming to shore.
It's believed all three hijackers were killed in the crash.
The O.J. Simpson Civil trial has recessed until next week-- after the
defense lawyer made a tactical decision not to cross-examine his client.

Also, today, the judge dismissed a female juror for "improper contact" with
participants in the case.
Ann-Marie Jamison, an aspiring actress says all she did was tell a law
clerk he had a nice tie.

When court resumes next week, the plaintiffs will likely call Simpson's

The Federal government is barely making the grade in the fight against drunk

The group says for the first time in 10 years-- the number of fatalities
caused by drunk driving accidents has increased in the U- S.

Attorney general Jim Gilmore has given the green light to law enforcement
officials who want to use children in cigarette buying "sting" operations.
Loudoun Republican Bill Mims requested the opinion.

Gilmore's ruling comes as he's forced Virginia into the legal fight against
a federal ban on youth smoking.
The Virginia Department of health just released data from an undercover
Children taking part in the survey were able to illegally buy tobacco
products 37-percent of the time.
The special election to fill Virgil Goode's state senate seat will be held
Today Governor Allen confirmed the date.
Democratic Delegate Roscoe Reynolds of Martinsville is running
against Republican Delegate Allen Dudley of Rocky Mount.
If Dudley wins, the G-O-P would gain a majority in the 40-member

Salem and Roanoke County attorneys issued their endorsement today for their

Virginia Public Safety Secretary Jerry Kilgore is stepping down.
Kilgore is expected to announce a bid for Attorney General.
Now, four Republicans are interested in running for Attorney General in

Governor George Allen since 1993.

A billboard on the route 460 bypass in Christiansburg has heated up some
Virginia Tech put up a plaque, just days before the annual gridiron grudge
match with the University of Virginia.
The billboard is a salute to higher education in the state.
For the second year in a row, USA-Today has ranked U-V-A the number one
