Some past and present Radford fire department sources say a firefighter's
alleged drug use may have been a public safety concern for years.
Tommy Long was charged with driving under the influence of drugs last
Thursday after the fire engine he was driving hit a parked police car.
Yesterday he was fired.

Several sources who did not wish to be identified said Long's termination is
long overdue.
Fire chief Martin Roberts says there's only been one other incident in the
three year's HE'S been chief.
He wrote Long a letter last Spring telling him to straighten up or he'd be
fired, and says there were no other problems until the accident last Thursday.
State police say Long admitted he had taken prescription medication, and
that Roberts remarked at the accident scene that he could tell Long was quote
"snockered."

Lord Botetourt High School Coach Andy Ward hasn't been back in class since
he was sentenced to jail for traffic violations two days ago.

license that was restricted because of two drunk driving charges.
The assistant Superintendent tells us Ward is still employed with the school
system, but won't say if he's been suspended.

Roanoke's Mill Mountian star is burning red tonight after a death in a drunk
driving related accident.
Donald Ray Fuller of Glade Hill died Sunday from injuries he suffered in an
accident on November 15th.
Fuller was a passenger in a pickup truck when the vehicle he was riding in
ran off the road on Route 40 in Franklin County.
State police say alcohol was involved in the accident.

Look for a shakeup in the ECHL standings in the next day or so, with word
last night that the Louisiana IceGators must now forfeit nine games for using
an ineligible player.
The IceGators played the first nine games of the year with five "veterans"
and the league allows each team to carry a maximum of four.
By the way, a veteran is someone who has played 200 regular season pro games.
