Some present and former Radford fire department sources say a firefighter's alleged drug use may have been a public safety concern for years.
The question is, how long did city officials know about it?
Tommy Long was charged with driving under the influence of drugs last Thursday after the fire engine he was driving hit a parked police car.
Yesterday he was fired.

Several sources who did not wish to be identified said Long's termination is long overdue.
Fire chief Martin Roberts says there's only been one other incident in the three year's HE'S been chief. He wrote Long a letter last Spring telling him to straighten up or he'd be fired, and says there were no other problems until the accident last Thursday.
State police say Long admitted he had taken prescription medication, and that Roberts remarked at the accident scene that he could tell Long was "snockered" when he marked on.
