A Salem couple became the state's latest millionaires.
James and Martha Richards claimed the second half of last Wednesday's
eight-point- seven million dollar jackpot.
The Richards bought the winning ticket at C-J's Market on Chestnut Street in
Salem.
The store gets five-thousand dollars for selling the winning ticket.
The Richards got their first of 19 payments yesterday for 149-thousand
dollars, after taxes.
An Alexandria Couple won the other half of the prize.

the Ethiopian Airlines plane crash on Saturday.

These are the LAST moments of the plane's flight before it crashed and broke
up in the sea.
The couple thought the low flying plane was an air show for tourists.
The Boeing aircraft had been hijacked and the pilot was ordered to fly to
Australia when the plane ran out of gas.
At least 120 people died in the crash, including all three hijackers. About
50 people did survive the crash.

Today is the most heavily traveled day of the year and higher gasoline
prices are not keeping holiday travelers off the road.
The American Automobile Association predicts that a record number of
Americans will be traveling over this long Thanksgiving weekend, most of them
by car.
The heavy traffic comes even with gasoline prices an average of 15 cents a
gallon higher than they were a year ago.

The Virginia Department of Health has just finished its second annual survey
of how often illegal sales of tobacco to minors are made.
About 100 youth volunteers tried to purchase tobacco at more than one
thousand stores and vending machines around the state.
They were successful in making an illegal purchase 37 percent of the time.

successor is now set for December 17th.
Democrat Roscoe Reynolds will take on Republican Allen Dudley in the special

elected to the 5th District congressional seat earlier this month.
If Dudley wins the special election, the G-O-P would gain a majority in the
40-member Senate.

discovered in their Springfield Road home yesterday.

Police found Jessie and Elizabeth Kendrick dead after their daughter could
not get them to answer their door.
Authorities would not say how the Kendricks died but foul play appears to
have been a factor.
A back window in the home may have been forced open, and the couple's car

Police did say the two may have been dead for several days before they were
discovered,
Autopsies will be scheduled for today.

An accident involving a fire truck and a police car has a Radford
firefighter out of a job AND charged with driving under the influence.
Tommy Long was placed on administrative leave immediately after the accident
last Thursday.
Yesterday he was fired.
Radford police chief A-C Earles says the fire truck hit a police car that
was parked at another wreck at the intersection of Rock Road and Auburn Avenue.
The accident caused minor damages to the police car and fire truck and no
one was injured.
Long had been a firefighter in Radford for more than 20 years.

driving.

The group says for the first time in 10 years-- the number of fatalities
caused by drunk driving accidents has increased in the U- S.

a "B Minus" a couple of years ago.
In Botetourt County yesterday, State police tried to help in the fight, by
setting up a sobriety checkpoint.
